The protagonist of the story, Teito is of the royal bloodline of Raggs, but had been brought up by a priest rather than the royal family. His identity was thus concealed when the Barsburg Empire invaded the kingdom in order to obtain the Eye of Mikheil, an artifact that essentially contains the god Michael. The sight of Ayanami killing his surrogate father traumatized Teito greatly, causing him to lose all his memories - including the fact that the Eye of Mikheil was embedded within him and thus making him the avatar of Mikheil himself
