Still Snoozing

On the occasion of posting in the "which avi has more crush on you"- thread, I'm here to say hi!
I'm Snooze, it's a pleasure~
We haven't really been introduced to each other, now, have we? :3

Yeah, tutorial videos could be helpful. They generally say the same things and give you a visual and auditory guide as well.
It's really good. Did you teach yourself that? You're quite talented! I could never do something like that, I don't have steady hands. orz

Well, you're going to be manager? More power to you! It's not easy work and I hear stories about that kind of thing but still it's something.
I'm a part-time teacher among many things, yeah. I have ties to my high school because I was their best math student for a long time and used to compete a lot and win for them.
I don't teach a regular one but an advanced class for students competing and stuff.
Part of the perks is that I get to do what I want and make my own materials as long as I cover whatever appears in contests. I teach basic proofs too so that they're ready for tackling proofs if they want to go into higher math. And I give recreational puzzles as well. It's a mixture of contest training, advanced math, and fun.
Usually they start me in the middle of the year, though, so while I'm not working for the school I do tutorials randomly.
Aside from that... I also have authoring and editorial credits on math and computer textbooks. And lecture on computer science on occasion. lol
(In fact, my mother, who is also a teacher and was once the head of her math department, used to ask me to fix the textbooks her school was using. That was my first taste of proofreading work. This is where I first learned how much the textbooks that a lot of schools use frankly suck. It's 2015 and still there isn't much improvement especially with the teaching guides. It's a good thing I have a rock-solid mathematical background so I know better because I am scared of how many teachers and students get misled. I'm not just talking about typos, but outright falsehoods and misstatements.)
It seems like I do a lot, but it's a ton of extremely irregular gigs I string together to hold up what I really do, which is mathematical research. (I'm completing a master's degree, just working on the thesis.) The job market for what I do is terrible (pretty much all research mathematicians are teaching and/or writing books, like me) but it's what I love and what I consider myself to be really good at.

Good luck with Belle!

Oh wow. I wish I could do that, some of the pages just flew around the house and I dunno where they are anymore... and some of the pages have holes in them. At this point I'm gonna have no choice but to purchase new copies of the first two books. orz
Haha, I don't blame you. Snape is a great and very interesting, detestable but lovable character. And oh in the movies, he's probably my favorite. Alan Rickman's performance is on point. emotion_kirakira

From what I read it's pretty much the same principle as singing--you want your power from the diaphragm, not the throat, but it's even easier to blow out your voice if you do it wrong. Kinda why I hold back so much in practice, might be doing it wrong playing it so safe but I dunno. I don't need a full-throated scream anyway, just a death metally rasp.
That nail art is so awesome, though! Such attention to detail and care. Love the one on your index finger best. emotion_kirakira
Yep, I teach math part-time. I'm mostly doing tutorials until I'm called back to work probably sometime in November, and trying to finish my thesis.

Hehe, well, this one came out quite good! ;w;
Good luck with the streak, then!

Oh lord, tapeback. lol My mother used to be really assiduous about binding the books with plastic, but that didn't save the insides because the glue fell apart and there were a ton of stray pages in the living room one day and I was like gonk when I saw them.
Half-Blood Prince might be my second favorite in the series.
Snape, yeah... I mean, he was a jerk early on. His treatment of Neville Longbottom was deplorable. I pay extra attention to these things now that I'm teaching. sweatdrop
But idk, it's easy for me to forgive the man regardless when I understood him a good bit more and saw the good things he did do.
Snape is lovable and sympathetic despite what I said. Not the most heroic, but he does redeem himself enough. 3nodding

It is cool. Saffron got me to listen to it. It's different but definitely still great stuff.
I can't really growl. I'm trying to teach myself, though, because I need it for my death metal stuff; it's practice but you gotta be careful because doing it wrong will mess up your vocal cords.
I don't blame you. Nails or guitar? Can be a really tough crisis especially if you like to paint them.

Haha, at least you had the sense to drop out quickly and avoid racking up further debt. I... finished with a degree in finance that I will probably never do anything with because I'm now in theoretical mathematics despite the job market being downright terrible. lol
Fair enough. I did like the new stuff enough but I understand if it's the classics that resonate with you more.
Cosplay streaks are so hard, didn't expect one. Still, good luck, and I look forward to seeing whatever you come up with!

Thank you, thank you!
The first two books I had were paperbacks so I guess of course they were gonna be the ones to fall apart.
Favorite book is Prisoner of Azkaban. After all these years. It still is.
Favorite character... tough call. Probably Sirius. Sirius was just so cool. When he died... ;__;
Or one of the Weasley twins because their antics made me laugh so much.
One of these days I'll get the first two books hardbound and reread everything.

Haha loooool nice acronym. lol
Have you heard of Brendon Small's Galaktikon? You might like them.
Well, I tried to teach myself "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle" a while back. Was too fast for me. I sucked hard then. I still suck at fast stuff but I can handle a little more of it now. lol
Keyboard is handy, and you don't normally need the full repertoire of a classic pianist to play keyboards in a rock/metal band because they're not the main emphasis (but it helps!)
Oh yeah, alternate picking, and galloping, and stuff like that. Took me a while to understand it and I may be a little sloppy. ^^;;
I wonder what that sounds like. Basses make different sounds based on what you hit them with. But wow, those are tough nails. ^^;;
I learned the hard way that it's so hard to play with long nails on your fretting hand, though.

Haha, hooray for our unconditional appreciation of certain singers! emotion_brofist
As for that... I live in a student residence for now (I'm a grad student) but I go back home every so often to stay with my parents and take care of my grandpa. And that's where my guitar and keyboard and amplifier and other gear are.

You're welcome! Yeah, Disney totally sanitized most of their stories but the songs are good!
We could certainly do much better with how we treat our land, yeah. Sad what's happening here, it'll bite us in the back. .__.
You're gonna cosplay all the Disney princesses? Good luck with that! emotion_kirakira
And thank you, thank you. I'm glad this avi seems to be well-received, I took a long while questing for it. xd

Ooh, another Harry Potter fan! I've been away from the books for so long since I finished them and reread like once a couple of years ago.
Should probably try and refresh my memory even if sadly my copies of the first two books are kind of old and falling apart orz

Me too. I tend to be partial to Stone Temple Pilots and Live, but so many of the 90s grunge and post-grunge bands just resonate with me. Grew up on that stuff.
Trust me, Dethklok isn't easy. Brendon Small is a hell of a guitarist. You really need to be able to practice and sit down and shred for like an hour or so regularly before getting Dethklok stuff down. You're not horrible just because you can't play Dethklok. I can't either (and I think you have to downtune the guitar for that, I forgot what tuning he plays in). Baby steps. There is a lot to learn in guitar playing. There isn't really gonna be a shortcut to practice and good foundations. That's pretty much the only way to get good. xp
Good luck, though, if you do want to continue learning it!

As for bass... I never really had a bass guitar (my "bass" was my keyboard plugged into a bass amp), but depending on what you're playing, the bass is like guitar, but different from it.
It's like a strange hybrid between something that plays some melodies (like the guitar) but also functions as extra percussion/low end.
You have people who pick it like a regular guitar and just mime the top string of whatever the rhythm guitar is playing, people who use their fingers, people who slap it and play funky rhythms. You even have Bob Daisley, who punches his bass.
Keep in mind that a bass has really thick strings so I can imagine it being tougher on the fingers (and guitar has taken its toll on my fingertips as is). Guess it depends how you want to approach the instrument.
(Then again, people do cool unconventional stuff with acoustic and even electric guitars. I use really thick strings and sometimes I pretend my guitar is a bass so that I can write my basslines.)

Singing is fun. I don't record a whole lot of it and I don't have a lot of training. I just learned mostly from being in a choir for a while, then watching my mother and other rock singers and stage actors.
Totally understand that kind of freezing up, too. Performing can be a little unsettling. Even the great ones get nerves sometimes.
But it's totally cool that you love to sing. And I'd think you're great at it. emotion_kirakira

Sometimes you just like what you like and don't really get it. I get like that too. Even if everyone will tell you it's generic or whatever and even you can't help but agree a bit you will hear something that totally clicks and lets you forgive the song anyway. lol I'm like that, I can be a total homer with my favorite vocalists and I binge-listen to their side projects even if they're not quite as "good". xd
Thank you, thank you! I just dig a lot of music and am open to exploring more. I would hope to be able to write something cool, I have a bunch of half-written songs but recording is hard for me because I usually live away from lots of my recording gear and instruments. Being home for the weekend is nice.

I was really just digging through the front page. I was in every thread on the front page at some point. lol

Also, speaking of Colors of the Wind, I keep forgetting to say this but your cosplay is AWESOME.

Haha, I don't blame you. Thing with bands like this is you really need to pour a lot of time into them.
I was thinking of them, and Porcupine Tree when I first listened. 3nodding

Hole are enjoyable, I just have a soft spot for 90s alt-rock/grunge stuff. I wouldn't be sure why people hate them, they stand up to other stuff in their time and genre as far as I'm concerned.
Some people I know just don't like Courtney Love/blame her for Kurt's death and she's not exactly the most personable public figure. Maybe that's where some of the hate comes from.
Or maybe they just don't like the genre. I mean, the music is kinda simple and some people like more complicated stuff, though that doesn't mean it's terrible.
But honestly, if you like them, then you do. Don't let anyone, not even me, drag you down for your musical choices.

Yep! I play guitar. I'm not gonna pretend I'm the best player in the world but it is one of my more serious hobbies (I've been playing pseudo-regularly for 11 years now, self-taught). My goal is, someday, to be able to put out even an EP of like five or six songs of music that encapsulates the things I like about different genres.
[I also play piano/keyboard (that was my first instrument, in fact, and I learned most of my musical theory taking lessons), used to be the "bassist" of my band and I sing a little. Been trying to teach myself drum programming so I can be a self-sufficient metal band. xd ]

Thank you, though! You're pretty cool too.

As for you summoning me, I was just digging through front page threads at random. Was surprised you summoned me but I took it. Thanks! emotion_yatta

Glad you dug the Guilt Machine track I posted. Seeing as you like Rush and Pink Floyd I figured they'd be right up your alley. emotion_awesome

Hole are awesome, btw. Really underappreciated band, imo. Too many people busy hating on Courtney for reasons that sometimes aren't even rational anymore. :c
Admittedly most of the songs I know of theirs are the more famous ones like "Doll Parts" and "Celebrity Skin" but I do dig what I've heard of them.
That song you posted is great. That primally rage-y sound.

Oh man I love Geddy's voice as well as his bass playing. I know many people dislike his singing, and I understand how he can be a matter of personal preference, but I have a soft spot for waily, high-pitched vocals in my prog. Then again I like or can at least appreciate many different vocalization styles. Glad to see you appreciate him too! emotion_brofist

Ooh! That is a great choice of song. It's brief (as far as prog songs go) but intricate and musical and damn the writing is brilliant.
I'm partial to "2112" myself (even if it's a long-a** song) or if I want something shorter I tend to go for "Freewill" just because that one is so catchy.
But good pick there. Rush just has so many good songs. emotion_awesome
