Samuel reads the note with feelings of mingled bemusement, shock, grudging respect and feather-fluffed offense competing to be expressed on his face.

'No hard feelings'. ... Of all the nerve!

He hits the pavement, a quiet metallic sound echoing as a result. The watch itself is quite a pretty thing. Small, simple, but delicately ornamented in gold and mother of pearl. A great deal of care was obviously taken in it's assembly. It takes Samuel a moment to drag himself to his feet, and attempt to give pursuit- though his speed most likely leaves much to be desired.

You... b***h!

(Oh, finally. Everyone's been so NICE to Samuel... it's refreshing to see someone handling him differently.)

Samuel tried to look back to see what the other was doing, but couldn't, unable to stop the spasms parting the man from his morning tea. It was all he could do to take off his spectacles before they fell from his face, which further hindered the man's ability to perceive whatever was happening behind him.

Urgh!...

No amount of restraint or good manners could restrain Samuel- a somewhat sheltered gentleman, wholly unused to such things- from responding the way he did, which was to turn away and support himself by a hand held to the wall while he was violently ill.

Wh-what on earth is that smell? ... Can't you smell it as well?

Manners be damned, it wasn't something he'd ever encountered before, and, as a somewhat superstitious man, it was setting his nerves decidedly on edge.

What do you m- augh!

Samuel tries to be polite, but can't stop himself pulling a fancy handkerchief over his mouth and nose. His bright blue eyes open beyond a squint for once.

W-what on earth is that?!

Flying machines, not so much. My father is quite well known for his work on locomotives, however, and I have studied those for a good few years. It's how I got into engineering to begin with.

Short of a pen, a cravat pin and a handful of pocket-watches, there's not else to obtain via my death unless we are counting soaking the vest you seem to dislike with my blood.

... I chiefly build elevators... hydraulics... architectural integration elements. It seems in this place we're at the point where machines make their own decisions.

What is there to be gained from taking it in the first place? I'm an engineer. And, by the looks of this country, a terribly outdated one at that.

I suppose it is something I am in two minds on. I guess I could be best described as lapsed, when it comes to faith. ... I suppose what I cannot condone is the willful deprivation of another's life without his consent. I rather suppose a man is free to do with his own life what he wishes. Of course, if I say that in my own country, I get lynched; but that is neither here nor there. (Why am I discussing philosophy with someone who likely wants to stab me in the gut? You're a strange man, Samuel, you really are.)

I believe something has been lost in translation. A life is not a form of currency. That is a slavers' line of thought, to which I am pointedly opposed.

A 'human' way of thinking is not a terrible thing in any case. The other shape-shifters seem more human-inclined when it comes to value of life...

You surely have a twisted notion of charity, if you consider the life of another as a commodity to be attained!

'Lady' or no, my dear, I rather doubt I would just let you take my life without a fight!

He lip curls, his usually good-natured smile becoming something decidedly darker. Despite this, Samuel's lightly muscled frame and ill-practiced combative stance easily marks the man as one who has seldom, if ever, engaged in fisticuffs.

Is that a threat?! I'll have you know I carry a flintlock!

He stands stiffly, alarmed. A cursory examination of Samuel's belt would reveal no such flintlock, either.

One needn't be so awfully suspicious. Short of vying for a scholarship, I cannot recall the last time I had an ulterior motive in speaking to another. ... But. Ah. Yes. Very well. ... don't... let me interrupt.

The many-faced assault on the young man's stiff back sensibilities seems to have overwhelmed his ability to be eloquent.

What good'd even come from it, if I would even consider? Which you and I both know I wouldn't. Really.
...I don't know you very well Ms. Dakki, or what you even have to lose.
Me, on the other hand? I'm no idiot. A deal's a deal.

Guess I'll be on my way then, if you say so.
Have a nice evening.

My mother is a saint and would never instil such an abrasive manner.

He scowls in distaste, although the effect is rather lost, since Samuel squints most of the time anyway. Mostly due to his terrible eyesight. He takes off his glasses and frowns as he polishes them.

I fail to see the harm in treating another with a little civility. You seem interesting enough, and I sought to know you better. Or does a man need an ulterior motive to instigate a conversation?

Thanks; I try to keep some kind of decency when it comes to work and just... being a person, I guess.
What I can only hope is that you don't ask me to betray it.
