Kyo has had a rather rough life because of his curse. Normally, parents of the jyuunishi either can't stand their cursed children or they become very over-protective of them. In Kyo's case, his true form was so horrifying that it would be hard for even the most over protective mothers to come to terms with.
Most people in the Souma family are afraid of the cat because they believe it to be cursed. Kyo's mother was afraid of him. She would constantly check to see if Kyo was wearing his bracelet and she refused to take him out into public, telling him that she thought he was so cute that she didn't want to share him with the rest of the world. Kyo's mother committed suicide when he was very young, because her fear of Kyo was putting so much of a strain on her that she could no longer take it.
Kyo's father blames Kyo for his mother's death. Even though his mother committed suicide for she was under stress of her son being the cat. Therefore, Kyo of course, is completely harmless -- In any case, Kyo's father disowned him. He refers to Kyo as "it" and believes Kyo to be a demon that deserves to be locked away in eternal darkness.
The only person Kyo has ever truly known as family is Kazuma, a martial arts master who owns a dojo where Kyo, Kagura, Yuki and Hatsuharu learned martial arts. Because Kazuma's grandfather was also cursed with the cat and is the one person who really understood what Kyo went through. He was one of the people who shunned his grandfather. To make up for it, Kazuma adopted Kyo. He made Kyo feel as if he was loved and thus improved Kyo's life very much. In return, Kyo loves Kazuma like a father.
Currently, Kyo is lives with Shigure, Yuki and Tohru because Kazuma believes that he is needed there, despite Kyo believing himself to be a nuisance. Kyo was supposed to come and live with Kazuma once he re-opened the dojo but there was a change in plans after Kazuma saw how Kyo was living his life and how his attitude towards himself and others was improving.
Kyo can be described as being a temperamental and strong-headed individual. He's the type of person who easily takes offence to just about anything and is often loud-mouthed, rude and acts before thinking. However, his personality seems to calm down considerably when he isn't around his cousin, Yuki Sohma. Despite his quick to anger personality and tendency to pick fights, Kyo actually has a softer side to him that he doesn't enjoy sharing with the public. A side that enjoys company and feels guilt when the wrong person gets in the way of his insults.
