I Am VerticalAfter Sylvia Plath
But I would rather be oblique.
I am not a star with my flares in galaxies
Quietly hurtling through vacuum space
So that each night I gleam in the sky,
Nor am I the glistening spectrum of a nebula
Digitally streamed to a monitor light years away
Unknowing my swirling dust congeals.
Compared with me, a star is indelible
And a nebula unstable, but more adaptable,
I want the one’s charisma and the other’s variation.
Tonight, above the watered satin pallet of wildflowers,
The stars and the nebulas have been glittering their secrets.
I watch below them, but none of them can see my atmosphere.
Sometimes I think that when I’m daydreaming
I must very slightly resemble them—
Courage gone dim.
It is more natural to me, daydreaming.
Then the vacuum and I are silent together,
And I shall be nebulous green dust in gossamer space:
Then the stars may brighten me for once, and the nebulas will envelop me.
