If you get a dobe, even if the ears are already taped, you still have to re-wrap them periodically. Also, if you just want to nudge the ears towards standing, you don't have to wrap them up like dane/dobe ears. You can just add a small strut.

So I don’t rudely hijack your thread with my slew of questions and admiration of your fishy knowledge I think I’ll just take this on over to your profile to clog up your comments instead! lol

Oh goodness, believe me, even if it was time consuming I would find that in itself very therapeutic. With my rats I am almost constantly messing with their enclosures, changing things around, finding new ways to improve their enclosures, and so on. Handling a living ecosystem sounds absolutely fascinating to me! It would be boring if there was no work to handle~

I have definitely seen those $1 per gallon sales at Petco’s and the like, but I have also seen this very interesting starter aquarium kit from Walmart. I know there is a stigma with purchasing fish from this store; I was going to purchase them from our local Petsmart instead. There’s a wonderful lady there who takes exceptional care of the fish. She’s such a sweetie. Anyway, so this tank has these features:
    • Size 55 glass aquarium (48 L x 13 W x 20 H)
    • Deluxe fluorescent full light hood, complete with 2 daylight spectrum bulbs
    • AquaTech 30-60 Power Filter with BIO-Fiber biological filtration and EZ-Change #3 filter cartridge
    • 200 Watt UL aquarium heater
    • Thermometer
    • Tetra food and water conditioner samples
    • Fish net
    • Thermometer
    • Easy setup instructions
    • TetraCare support information
    • Ideal for fresh water tropical fish, gold fish, or fish only salt water aquariums
    • Aquarium holds approximately 53-55 gallons of water when fully decorated

But does that tank come with some pretty handy stuff? I hear a lot of talk around the Pets forum that a heater is required for a lot of fish to keep a nice manageable temperature, especially for Betta, and the filter, but what does daylight spectrum bulbs mean? And I would think the food that comes with this kit isn’t the best for fish, right? What would you suggest as a high-quality food for fishies?

Uhm, uhm, and while I would love to have some fishy feeders for my rats from this tank I was also hoping to make it very pretty with living things like those live plants I see a lot of you use. And those fish you suggested look so pretty! How many of each would you suggest I start out with? I wouldn’t want to overstock the tank.

Also, what few fish do you think I could add just for ogling that wouldn’t be used for rat food? Or would that be pushing it?

Educate meeeee! I’m also looking on websites and whatnot for beginner care so don’t worry, I’m not going to just jump into this unprepared. smile

They totally dodged around the point in that description- oh, but these grains aren't normally allergenic! We screen for mycotoxins! Our food is nutritionally complete! (uh, ALL commercial dog/cat food needs to abide by AAFCO/whatever group in that country, which includes being 'nutritionally complete' in that the animals don't die from clinical malnutrition- so I just have to cringe at that statement, as it's pure fluff). Oh, and to end it, let's say that dry food is good for cats. Another statement of pure fluff, since (even if it was true) if dry food was good for cats, it doesn't necessarily mean that /brand/ of food is good.
"Cats are excellently equipped to handle starch"- yes, this is why they have such short intestines and have sharp teeth. Sharp teeth is excellent for chowing down on potatoes!

It's like Evolution but with less targeting of vegan consumers.

Thanks for confirming the sword for me! I was thinking it might be a sword, but I wasn't sure. I hear swords are heavy feeders...good or bad?
Oh, and here's something you'll find amazing: My LFS is /very/ disorganized. The tanks are jungles, literally- covered with plants, I would be afraid to stick my hand in them since I wouldn't know what I would touch. They literally just pulled the plants out from the middle of the water, the tanks were so packed and crazy. But, despite all that, I didn't get a single snail!
Also, I saw a potted ruffle sword at Walmart. Think it would be a good buy or no?

Wow, that's giant duckweed? Weird, I always considered it to be normal sized. Yay for giant duckweed!
How does duckweed take over? I mean, does it just grow a new leaf and then separate, or what?

Does it look like I have any wisteria? What about anubia?Java fern?

Aww, don't feel too rushed! I've had these plants for four days, I don't mind waiting some more time. xD
As a hint, they /should/ be mostly fast growing, low-light, beginner-type plants...that's what I requested, anyway, who knows if that's really the case, lol.

Since you're online right now, thought I needed to take advantage of the opportunity!

Here. Password to the album is 'aquarium' (oh how creative am I).
Identify as many plants as you can. Go! (and to save unneeded frustration, the real plants are all together on the left side, the fake plants are all together on the right side).

I hope I don't have a crpyt in there. I don't know, all aquarium plants look the same to me! -wail- Also, at the LFS, one of the plants I was given was said to be illegal to sell since it's invasive. Which of those plants is that one, and what species is it? (and they're not talking about duckweed).

Question.
The hood that came with my tank could only take bulbs up to 15 watts, and that wasn't very much, so I decided to get a clamp lamp and just use that for my aquarium lighting. Is a clamp lamp good to use for an aquarium? More specifically, a soon-to-be /planted/ aquarium?
Another thing. Right now it has a white CFL bulb in there (like the kind you use in regular household lamps). It's like, 25 watts, but it /says/ it's the equivalent as a 90 watt incandescent bulb. When I'm calculating the watts per gallon of my tank, do I use 25 watts or 90 watts? The bulb also produces 1,500 lumens, if that helps any.

I went to Walmart and they had nice shop lights there too, but a bit too big for a 10 gallon. xD If I ever get any larger tanks, though, I really like the idea of using shop lighting.

Hii Cardinal. I got a 10 gallon tank today!
Anyway, it took me over half an hour to figure out the filter. xD I feel like such an idiot. I had it put together fine but plugged it in and it made just the most horrible grating sound and I was like, what am I doing wrong? And my intake tube wasn't taking in anything and I was so lost. So I stared at it for a while and thought I should put some water in the filter housing, maybe to get it going...oh, what do you know, the filter worked great then.
Just wanted to share my idiot moment. xD You probably have similar stories of confusion after all those years of fish keeping.

But besides that, here's a serious question. I got a brand-new aquarium thermometer. It's pretty spiffy, it uses a magnet to cling to the front of the tank so I can read it easily. Anyway, it seems to be a dud...it's saying the temp is in the 80s when my heater isn't even turned on and the water feels freezing cold. It's completely submerged and has been for like three hours. Is there anything I can do or did I just waste four dollars? How can I make sure my thermometers work good in the future?

I don't think I'll be able to have a thirty gallon tank. The price for all the other aquarium stuff I'll be needing, like the water testing kit and the siphon and the fish net...I calculated a little bit of it and it's a lot more than what I expected, so I'll have to stick with a ten gallon. I'd also need it to be tropical, since you get more variety of fish to choose from that way, and also because my house is kept fairly cold (in the upper 60s) and I hate cold water. It seems like it'd be a pain to like, have to put my hand in a tank with icy cold water like that. -shudder-

But thanks for the list anyway! If I was to ever get a second tank, I might go with a school of those minnows and the loaches. I've never heard of Hillstream loaches before, and they're really pretty for being coldwater fish. I don't think I could get a goldfish though, I'd be too afraid that they'd eat my minnows (apparently they like to eat anything that can fit in their mouths...eek).

Tropical stocking lists would be well appreciated!

I was wondering why you never commented me back! I was like "Aw, I wonder if I made her mad somehow?" xD Glad to know it was just Gaia messing up.

It would have to be a readily-available fish I could find at most pet stores. Not into exotics just yet. I'd also like it to be a peaceful community tank, not a single-species tank.
Also, where I live, we have really hard water. It's so bad that when I used to mist my houseplants, mineral deposits used to be left on the leaves. Since I'm a beginner, I don't want to bother with altering the pH, so fish that could tolerate/thrive in a slightly more base environment (I haven't tested the water or anything, so I'm not sure the exact pH, but I would estimate it's at least 7.1 or so). I know a lot of tropical fish, like neon tetras, prefer acidic soft water, so many tetras and rasboras are out of the question.
Do you have any ideas? I know, I really squeezed you into some tough constraints, but any suggestions for the stocking is great.
