This past weekend I took part in the tomol crossing for 2007. The Elye'wun (Swordfish) is ten years old this year. The crew has come a long way, both in experience and physical endurance, and though I can't speak for them, I thought spiritually as well, since our first channel crossing in 2001. Although some alterations have been made to the crew (a new captain was elected, some paddlers were unable to attend this crossing), everything went fairly smooth, even taking into account the severe damage Elye'wun endured during a practice paddle only a few weeks before the crossing (she was patched up by the crew, who worked hard together to make her sea worthy once more). She made the long journey from the Mainland to the island of Limuw (Santa Cruz), remaining strong and true the whole way, just like the paddlers. I had never had the chance to observe the trek from the point of view I did this year, as I was placed on the support boat which followed close behind the Elye'wun the entire way. Their unision, their spiritual and physical power, their determination...it was undeniable and unmistakable. They are men (and women, this year!) to be praised. I am utterly grateful for the experience.
My only complaint is that we should not have to make another long journey down to the second campsite after spending more than five hours on the ocean, and that next year we try to reserve the first camp so as to avoid that. ;]
