A young woman strolls through an old, forgotten European town; as if the very past itself had shrouded it away from the influence and decadence of the modern world. She strolled elegantly through the town, her short, rounded dress staying perfectly still as she traversed along the cobblestone-laden pathways.
Soon, she made her way to a small fountain in the center of the marketplace. As she made her way over, she played rotated the gears in a large pocketwatch she carried, the gears chiming and playing a soothing, ethereal melody.
The strange woman sat down slowly, pursing her red lips slightly as she smoothed out some of the folds from her dress. Placing her hands in her lap, she smiled warmly at the visitor who had come to see her.
"Good afternoon to you, little one. Have you come to hear a tale of woe and sorrow? If so, lay thyself down and partake in the story I am about to unravel for you."
She closed her eyes and began to recite the tale as if almost by memory.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once, a long time ago, there was a story that was told throughout this town. It was a sad tale: A tale of unrequited loved.
There was once a young seamstress in the town, and she harbored an beautiful and bittersweet love towards a man in the town. She would devote her entire being to the man.
But this was a love doomed never to take shape. For you see, this man was a nobleman who had already taken a lady's hand as his fiance.
The young woman was devastated. Rather than live with her broken heart, she instead took her own life.But even in death, she found no end to her loneliness. Instead, she took another man with her to the underworld to ease the pain in her heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She wagged her finger slightly. "But you see, there was another story that happened in this very town."
She held her arm out, as if gesturing to the town itself. "You see, there was another maiden in this town just like the maiden in the story. And just as in the story, she fell in love with a nobleman.
"And just as in the story, she took her own life. And just as in the story, she took another man in his stead. Thus, this was a story within a story"
She slowly stood up and bowed to the listener, swinging her chiming pocketwatch in an pendulum motion as he she started to walk away, a cool morning mist shrouding her presence the farther she went.
"All of this in a town where the fantastical is not always so fantastical," her voice called, its echo reaching farther in the distance.
