Prologue
Why did she have to be paired up with her mortal enemy? His kind killed her father in front of her and her mother. Then took her mother captive, forcing her to be changed into one of them, and kept for an eternal supply of food.
Jade’s goal is to one day, free her mother, and avenge her father. And NO ONE would get in her way. That’s why she trained so hard. She had to be better than them to win. She had to be the best.
Chapter 1
Jade sat up quickly, hitting her forehead off of the wooden beam that held the top bunk up. Her small black kitten raised his head and his ears perked up at the sound.
The dream had been the same as always. Jade was back in her village, a carefree child. A princess. It was still peaceful.
When she was five all that changed. Vampires raided her village and killed anyone who dared stand in their way. Jade’s mother was barely able to save her.
“Heh. Why am I dwelling on the past?” She sighed forcing herself to smile.
‘I might as well get up.’ she thought rubbing her head. “What do you think Dae-kun? Should I just get up?” She smiled looking at her kitten.
She didn’t expect him to answer, and nearly hit her head, again, when a voice replied, “It’s about time.”
Jade glared at the doorway where a shadow stood. ‘Why did Sensei have to send HIM?’ Her glare burned brightly, filled with despise and hatred.
Christian smirked arms crossed and leaned back resting on the door frame. In the morning sunlight his black hair had a brilliant blue tint. His perfect complexion looked milky-white and beautiful. Despite his flawless beauty and nicely-toned body, Jade hated him. Not for who he was, but for what he was. A vampire.
Jade pulled her blanket up covering her barely concealed chest. “What do you WANT Christian?” She already knew what he wanted, but she wanted him to get the hint and leave.
“Don’t flatter yourself. I wouldn’t DREAM of looking at your chest.” His arrogant tone pissed Jade off more than the insult itself did. “Besides, you KNOW what I’m here for. Sensei sent me to get your lazy a** out of bed.”
“Okay. I’m up. You can leave now.”
“Now where’s the fun in THAT?” He smirked knowing he was pissing her off.
“Fine. Do whatever. I don’t care.”
Jade stood up leaving her blanket on her bed. Even though it bothered her severely to be standing in front of her enemy in a short, strapless shirt and her panties, she hoped it would make him leave.
Christian looked at her with surprise. His eyes flicked down her delicate frame. ‘Not bad. Now if only her personality matched her figure, I might find myself attracted to her.’ He thought still smiling and looking at her.
Jade’s face turned bright red and burned with both embarrassment, and hatred.
“Calm down. I’m leaving.” He turned around still smiling to himself. He glanced back stealing one more look at Jade. He doubted he’d ever see her like this again.
“WHO IN THE HELL DID HE THINK HE WAS!?!?” Jade screamed to herself as she left her cabin now fully dressed. Christian, who was leaning casually against the cabin, had the usual smart-a** response he always had waiting. “Well, I’m Christian. At least I was last time I checked.”
Ignoring him, Jade continued past him without a glance in his direction. The lake was at least a good half an hour, slow walk, away.
“Aw, so you’re going to pretend you didn’t want me to see you half naked now?” He whispered only inches away from her ear. She turned and shuddered at the chill that just ran up her spine.
She frowned and raised her hand to slap him, but he caught it a mere centimeter from his cheek.
Christian grabbed her other wrist and pushed her back against a tree, her right arm pinned above her head, the other by her thigh.
“Now if we are going to have to be paired up, we need to be able to get along. That in itself is going to be a challenge, but you need to TRY!”
“It’s a two-way street Christian. I don’t see you trying very hard!”
Before Jade even knew what was happening, Christian’s thumb ran across her bottom lip. She pushed him away. “If you want a fight, you’ve got it. But DON’T touch me like that EVER again!”
She fell back into a fighting stance and cleared her mind.
The sun beat down harshly on the two of them. The blinding light took away many of the shadows, giving Jade a slight advantage. Christian mainly used shadow jutsus. And even though Jade was known as the ‘White Shadow Tigress’, she had two other talents. She was a white tiger shape-shifter, the last of her kind, and could use the element of fire.
Christian merely laughed at her. “Do you honestly think you can take me on? Do you KNOW what vampires can DO?”
“And just what do you mean by that?” She asked raising her eyebrow.
“Well,” he lounged against a tree, “first off, we can disappear from sight,” He vanished saying that. “And teleport, if you will in the process.” He whispered in her ear now standing behind her. “I can read minds, and know ones every whim. And control my opponents.”
“Is that so? Prove it.”
He smirked and attempted to tap into her mind. His eyes opened wide in shock. This was a first. Somehow Jade had formed a barrier protecting her mind from intrusion, unbeknownst to even her.
“How are you doing that?”
“Doing WHAT exactly?”
‘Hn. She doesn’t even realize what she’s doing...’ He thought to himself.
Jade smiled deviously once she realized that she had done something that confused the ‘all knowing’ Christian.
Slowly she shifted into her tiger form. The shift from human to any animal form was a delicate and enjoyable process.
Christian’s eyes grew wide, again, as if he was in fear. He hadn’t expected to see someone in the royal tiger family. He had heard his father speak of a young princess who escaped the attack thirteen years ago. But he never dreamed that he would be the one to find her.
The previous year, rumor amongst vampires was that the vampire nation had proof that the princess was alive. In turn, they started a search. They thought the royal family had been destroyed. No one expected a five-year-old girl to make it alone in the wild.
The shock finally faded and Christian’s expression grew less and less human.
Just as Jade lunged at Christian in an attack, their Sensei stepped in and caught her by the waist. Jade furiously kicked to get out of his grip. But failed miserably.
“You might as well give up. I’m not letting go until you get a hold of yourself.”
Finally Jade calmed down and was let go of. She still glared death in Christian’s direction.
