On Visual Metaphors and Animators on Crack |

I just saw the Prince of Tennis movie, and it is so incredibly weird. It's really good, the plot is vaguely interesting and made me giggle and squee alot, the art didn't go on a complete detour from the TV show, but, honestly, the animators must have been on crack. For example, the Tezuka zone. Normally he just glows gold and has a cosmos-y background, and it's cool. In this it's like: "Okay, the planets are zooming around, but you know it's just a case of taking the visual metaphors a little bit too far, and, uh, why did he just hit multiple tennis balls(none of which actually touched racquet, let me point out) and why are they on fire and...the dinosaurs are running away. What the hell." This was absolutely hysterical and all, and when I was watching it I was just dying of laughter, but that doesn't change the fact that the animators must have been drugged. And then the match between Echizen Ryoma and Echizen Ryoga. Somewhere around the point where the ship was blowing up and they were still playing tennis I just went "Bwah?". I mean, it's a stupid thing for them to do, but the match still seemed pretty normal. The firey cycones were a little weird, but still, it's just over-extended visula metaphors. And then a large wave comes and they're playing tennis underwater, and at thisd point I'm having a little trouble figuring out what's metaphor and what's actually happening. And then they start flying. And glowing. And when did this become freaking DragonBall Z. And then they appear to be naked, glowing, and blue. Then, we're back on the ship, Atobe has shown up with the police (which was one of those ever-so predictable, but ever-so squee-worthy thing), the court shows no sign of having had a large wave show up, and Ryoma apparantly won the match. And I have absoluely no idea what just happened and it is still a wonderful movie.
