My Endeavors to Reclaim the Passion for my Art
Hello and Welcome. I am The Shoppe Elf, a former-artist sharing her submissions for Gaia's Weekly Art Contests.
The Geisha Dragoness

This was my entry for the Weekly Art Contest, during the second week of July. This dragoness didn't do so well in the contest, but she did receive perhaps the most comments out of all of them. There was a troll-commenter of sorts copying and pasting the same statement about 'tracing' on each of the participating images. They added the word 'Gross' to the comment on mine, and then also appeared to like the piece. From what I can tell, five other comments were made after the fact, but I never saw what they said before they were removed. I'm kind of curious if they were referring to the 'Inker/Tracer' argument illustrated in the movie 'Chasing Amy'.

Regardless of that, this is a much older piece and was perhaps my most popular seller back when I had a Cafe Press shop. She was actually commissioned by a former coworker of mine back around 2010 or 2011. My coworker had seen a mermaid I had drawn and gotten printed on a tote-bag I used for shopping and asked if I could draw something that was half-dragon and half-woman. I said "Sure", and then proceeded to ask which kind of dragon she wanted for it. That question seemed to confuse her, as she didn't research the various types of dragons throughout mythological history as I did. I was usually the odd one at that store, way back when.

I proceeded to draw up three different types of dragons, one that was Eastern/Oriental themed, one that was Aztec/Mayan themed, and one that was Western/Irish themed. The Geisha Dragon appealed to her the most, so she was the first I completed. She was hand-drawn with pencil on paper, traced over and inked with a ballpoint pen, and then later scanned and colored using Photoshop. Several of the extra designs in her attire and background were pulled from several sets of ZipTones I purchased a while back.

This piece is also the inspiration behind another friend of mine commissioning me to draw up a tattoo design involving an Oni. wink I actually get to start working on that pretty soon, now that I've completed the commission I've been working on for one of my bosses.
