||The year's nearly over, so here's the New Year survey!
So guess what, guys? Another year has come to an end. Heck, another decade has come to an end. And so, like every year, I have a survey to fill out.
1. What did you do in 2019 that you'd never done before?
Gave birth. Became a Mum to my gorgeous little girl Sabrina.
2. Did you keep your New Years' Resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Did pretty well with those this year. I left my job at Specsavers that I'd been unhappy at for way too long. Taina got a new job. Sabrina was born, and she's healthy and (usually) happy. I even cleared off my credit card debt completely. The only thing I hoped would happen this year but didn't was Taina getting his restricted driving license.
3 . Did anyone close to you give birth?
Haha, yeah. I did.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandma died a couple of months ago. She was my last remaining living grandparent, so now I have none left.
5. What countries did you visit?
For the first half of the year I was pregnant, and for the last half of the year, I had a newborn in tow. So I didn't travel anywhere outside the country.
6. What would you like to have in 2020 that you lacked in 2019?
I'd like for Tai to get his license so he can drive to work sometimes rather than having to catch a bus and a train, which takes so long. I would also like for Sabrina to start finding more of a pattern, like napping at the same times each day or at least napping longer periods, rather than many mini naps throughout the day, so I can work my needs around her and not feel constantly stressed.
7. What date from 2019 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
5th and 6th June- Although parts of my experience of labour and giving birth are hazy, because I was so exhausted, I definitely think I will never forget most of that experience.
8.What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Successfully creating a human. A very cute one, too.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I failed to lose weight after having baby. I failed even to not gain more weight after having baby. Apparently stress makes me insanely hungry all the time.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I got 2 colds. Both times Taina caught it from someone at work, then Sabrina caught it off him, and then I caught it off her. Having a whole family sick at once is great fun. But, at least I didn't get any flus or other bad illnesses. The flu vaccine I got while pregnant seemed to work.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I didn't buy much for myself. I bought some second hand stuff for Sabrina, like her cot, stroller and baby monitor, all of which have been useful. I did get myself a new phone a few months ago though, because my phone I had was old and couldn't handle many newer apps, plus had only enough space for like 2-3 apps at a time on it.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Taina has worked hard, helping with Sabrina, including getting up at 5am many days when she wakes up and wants to play, and he lets me sleep in. Emma from the Family Start programme has been a helpful support in our lives, getting us heaps of free stuff for Sabrina, and helping with talking through things we were struggling with and offering advice.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I wouldn't go that far. But I was disappointed by Plunket as an organisation. Their reputation for being really helpful for parents and new babies- but we only get visited like once every two months, so they barely do anything for us. I expected we'd get visits a lot more frequently.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Food. Rent. Power bill. Internet. Phone. A little bit for Netflix and Disney+ subscriptions. I count myself lucky if there's anything left after that.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Well, before Sabrina was born I was pretty excited about her impending arrival. But also extremely terrified at the same time.
16. What song will always remind you of 2019?
Most Walk The Moon songs, especially the newer ones like Timebomb. The Sound by The 1975, as well as other songs by them. And various Two Door Cinema Club songs.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or Sadder? About the same. I have a daughter now, so that's awesome. But that also comes with the responsibility of parenting, which is stressful.
ii. Thinner or Fatter than last year? Fatter. Like previously mentioned, stress is not good for my figure.
iii. Richer or Poorer? Richer!! No more credit card debt, and living off WINZ and IRD benefits, plus whatever Taina gets from working at 2 Degrees part-time actually makes us better off than when I was working full time.
18: What do you wish you'd done more of?
Reading books. I started reading Sense And Sensibility (the classic Jane Austen novel) earlier this year and still haven't finished it.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Having to lie down with an ice pack a lot when I got pregnancy migraines in the second trimester. All those summer afternoons I would have loved to spend out somewhere.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it at Dad and Jill's new place. Jill's daughter Brierlee and her partner Steve were there too. It was okay, but Tai and I got up early when Sabrina woke up, but Dad and Jill insisted on sleeping in as long as possible so we got bored, and Dad decided we didn't need lunch because we had a big breakfast (it was a pretty average sized breakfast in our opinion so me and Taina were a bit hungry). Plus Sabrina was overexcited at being at her Grandad's place, so she got grizzly because she wouldn't nap.
22. Did you fall in love in 2019?
I fell in love with my baby daughter, does that count?
23. How many one-night stands?
Nope. That sounds far too crazy.
24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Several of my favourite Netflix shows had new seasons this year, like The Good Place, Atypical, Workin Moms, plus we saw some new shows like Dead to Me and Russian Doll. Plus I decided to watch Gossip Girl, even though that show is several years old now, just because it's one of those shows that gets referenced a lot in like Buzzfeed articles and quizzes. It's not exactly amazing quality TV, a bit overdramatic and soapy, but me and Taina have gotten quite hooked.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
26. What was the best book you read?
Didn't actually finish a book at all, but what I read of Sense and Sensibility I enjoyed.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I was already a fan of Walk The Moon, The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club, but ended up listening to their music a lot more and getting to know a lot more songs because we discovered early on that playing music videos on YouTube can help calm and distract Sabrina when we need her to drink her bottle. Also Vampire Weekend released a new album, quite folk-influenced and it's very pretty so I enjoyed that.
28. What did you want and get?
We got a lot of things for Sabrina, most of it second hand stuff but in good condition so that was great. Taina and I both got new phones, although his he got free and can only keep as long as he keeps working at 2 Degrees.
29. What did you want and not get?
I would love to find a more comfortable mattress and pillow for my bed. The problem is, I really don't know exactly what type I need to be comfortable. I've been getting bad leg cramps in bed lately and it's definitely affecting my sleep.
30. What was your favorite film of the year?
We didn't get to the movies much this year, but we saw Avengers: Endgame, and it was definitely very satisfying, after the many years of build up of the movie series.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 34. Me and Taina were at home with Sabrina, but we went out to the mall in Porirua for lunch. It was Sabrina's first time in the mall and she handled it well. Then in the evening Jess came over and babysat Sabrina while Tai and I went out for dinner at Little India.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more enjoyable?
If I had more knowledge and confidence about parenthood.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2019?
My personal fashion concept was wearing large plus sized clothes from Kmart because they fit while I was pregnant, and were considerably cheaper than buying actual maternity wear.
34. What kept you sane?
I kept sane? That's news to me. But well, Taina definitely helped. And Jess has popped around a few times and helped out with Sabrina too so I'm grateful to have her living nearby.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Oh, I dunno. Chris Hemsworth is alright I guess.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Early in the year there was a shooting in Christchurch. Shootings are virtually unheard of here in New Zealand so that definitely caught my attention and sympathy for the victims' families.
37. Who did you miss?
I missed Mum, mostly because I wish she could have had a chance to meet Sabrina. Also Christmas this year, Dad and Jill were so lax and disorganised, and it really made me miss Mum and her super organisational skills.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Sabrina of course. Emma from Family Start, she's great.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2019?
That every time parenting starts to become easier, it means your child is about to undertake some big new development that will leave you clueless again.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: "We're surviving, we're still living, are we stronger?"- This Life by Vampire Weekend
