Chapter 48:

The search was a dead end, deep down Arthur should have known it wouldn't be that easy to find them. The Institute had been at this since the bombs dropped, so of course they would know how to hide from the world. They got lucky the first time around, they weren't going to strike twice. Danse could only watch his leader slowly fall apart, but he quickly collects himself. This wasn't going to get them anywhere. The only thing they could do was hope Sara and Nate would be able to find a way out. Danse slowly walks up to Arthur and places his hand on his shoulder. "They'll figure it out.." Arthur flinches at his touch as he takes a deep breath. "I just want answers..." He slowly leans away as he shakes his head. "I need to return to the ship..." He was so lost at the moment, but the Brotherhood still needed him. "I'll come with, no point on dwelling on something we have no control over..." Arthur hangs his head and they leave the ruined school. They weren't going to find any answers here. And there was no point of returning to Virgil, he made it clear he had no answers for them. Meanwhile, several days had past, and Nate and Sara were slowly reaching their breaking point. They were only fed once a day, and questioned constantly. 'Father' was grilling Nate nonstop as to why he left the child Synth behind. He had his reason and felt he owed this Shaun any answers. However, when they were left alone, they talked about the layout of wherever it was they were at.

From what little they had seen, it wasn't as large of an area as the Institute itself. But large enough to get the job down. The entire staff were only Synths, no other human called this place home. Made it easier for them to get work done and not have to worry about food and such. However with their latest additions, they had to change that to make sure they didn't starve to death. After all they still wanted answers and would keep them alive for as long as they felt it necessary. How long that might be however, was a whole different question. Nate was starting to worry that, they would at some point change their minds, and just kill them. But Father didn't seem to want to let go of the idea that Sara had some kind of technology on her that they could use for themselves. She kept trying to tell him she didn't, but he didn't believe her. Even if she did she wouldn't really know how to explain it to them. If she did have something to hand over, she doubted they would still be alive, so they were quickly running into dead ends. Their only chance, was to somehow get a hold of his Pip-Boy and use it to teleport them out of this place since it still held the chip given to him in the first place. Question was where was it, Father had to have it close by. If that was the case they needed to find some way to get to it, but so far, all their efforts to try and get out of the tiny room had been pointless.

So far if Father didn't need them, only X6 would pay them a visit with a small tray of food, and nothing else. Nate knew what they were doing, and he knew it was only a matter of time before one of them lost their minds. Which was slowly giving her an idea. "I think I have a plan." Nate blinks as he looks at her. "Oh?" She nods her head at him. "It won't be long before X6 wonders in with our daily meal. What if he came in and one of us was 'dead'?" Nate rises his brow at this. "Go on.." "Hear me out, one of us will play dead, I doubt they'll think twice about it. It'll give us a shot to try and find your Pip-Boy if nothing else..." Nate rubs his chin, his beard growing on him since he hadn't been allowed to shave since they had been here. "I can do that, hell I used to do that during the war. Thing is there's no telling where they might take me...hell they might just throw me into a fire or something..." She looks down a bit, she wasn't feeling to well. "I know, it's not the most ideal plan, but it's the only one we have right now. Otherwise we're not getting out..." Nate gives it some thought as he nods. "Now or never...alright. But we really got to sell it, so I want you to hit me a few times." Sara blinks at this, but slowly starts to nod. It made sense in a way, this had to look real. Make it look like she snapped and ended up killing Nate. "Can't say I ever punched someone before...no hard feelings right?" Nate chuckles at this. "No hard feelings, once we're out, we'll still be friends. Though...just promise me one thing?" "Sure." Nate coughs softly. "Tell Arthur, he needs to know."

She sighs deeply at this. "Alright, but I still have no idea how to explain it." Just be honest with the man, even if it does sound a bit crazy.." She agrees, and starts to punch the crap out of him. She had never hit anyone before, and she quickly realizes that she never wanted to do it again as he lays on the floor, still as a board. So when X6 came in, he looks down at the floor to see a still bleeding Nate. She had smeared some blood on her face like a mad-man as she gives the Synth a rather creepy smile. She knew how to play crazy, and she looked down right insane. "You want a piece of me to, I'll f*cken rip your eyes out you piece of s**t!" X6 just walks in, and knocks her out, she hits the floor hard as the Synth looks at Nate. "Father will not be pleased..." He picks Nate up and leaves the room, locking it up before taking the limp body to a different room. Nate was surprised how careful the Synth was as he feels his back now on a metal table. "Pitiful, but perhaps we can still use your DNA for a new line of Synths." He turns and leaves the room, not bothering to close the door so he could go fetch father. Nate opens his eyes slowly and takes in a deep breath. Holy s**t it worked, now he just needed to find his Pip-Boy. He slowly slides himself off the table. He had to hand it to Sara, seemed this crazy plan of hers was going to pay off. He just wished his face didn't hurt so much, but he would deal with that later.

He takes his time, moving as slowly as he could so the army of Synths didn't spot him. It seems like forever before he finds what looks to be a small storage room. He needed to move faster now, it was only a matter of time before X6 would return to that room and find him gone. He makes his way in, hoping to God he could find his Pip-Boy. He lets out a small gasp as he pulls it out of a small box with Nate's name on it. He puts it on as he quickly slips out, now he just had to find Sara. It wasn't to hard to retrace his steps back to a door that had been bared closed. No wonder they couldn't get out. It was easy to open the door on the outside as he rushes in and finds Sara, still on the floor. He picks her up as he turns to his Pip-Boy. He didn't care where they went and just locks onto the Prydwen. He hopes for the best as the chip in his Pip-Boy does it's job, and teleports them out of the room they were in. He doesn't let her go until they were safely at the airport. Nate takes in a deep breath, it worked, it actually worked. He ignores the looks he got as he made his way to a waiting Vertibird and gets them onto the ship. He gets her to Cade quickly as the doctor takes a look at them both. "What happened to you?" Nate was about to answer when Arthur comes running out. Someone had seen the flash and saw someone making their way to the medical bay. Nate steps back as he tells them what he could. He had no idea about the location, but judging by the number of Synths that had called the place home, it had to be huge.

"The leader of the Institute, Father, created a Synths of himself..I should have known he would pull something like that.." Nate looks down as Arthur remains at Sara's side. She was fine, just out for the count as Cade gives Nate a stimpak for his face. "It was the same questions over and over again, he wasn't happy with what happened. So we finally came up with a plan, I let her beat me up and I played dead...oddly enough it worked." Arthur blinks as he slowly looks to Nate's now healing face. "You let her punch you..." He couldn't help but laugh, but soon he stops. "s**t, they'll just come looking for you again.." Nate sighs deeply at this. "Right, they know far to much, and what's worse is X6 knows Danse's recall code. It's why I left with the Courser." Arthur nods at this slowly as Sara lets out a low groan and blinks. "s**t someone hit the reset button didn't they?" Nate chuckles at this as Arthur hugs her tightly, she smiles as she leans into him. "How long have we been gone?" He takes a slow deep breath. "Two weeks...we tried looking for you both, but we had no idea where to look." She holds onto him tightly, just happy to be in his arms again. "My head hurts...X6 really knocked me out.." Cade hands her a washcloth so she could clean off her face. "Why is there blood on you?" She blushes at the doctor. "I hit Nate a few times and smeared his blood on me, make it look like I went bat s**t crazy....hey it worked.." Cade could only chuckle softly as he shakes his head. He made sure they were alright before letting them go. Nate wonders off to go find Danse as Sara was pulled into Arthur's room. He locks his door as he holds onto her tightly. "I was so scared..."

She sighs deeply at this as she lays her head on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, I had no idea they've been watching me.." He lets her go as he looks into her eyes. "What do you mean?" She licks her lips nervously before she answers. "From what 'Father' told me, the Institute has been watching me, the entire time I've been here. They'er convinced I have access to technology that...allows to travel to different timelines.." Arthur was at a lost as she holds up her hands. "Okay so...I'm not going to lie, this is going to sound as crazy as you think it will." She takes a moment to collect herself, she had been dreading this day, but there was no point on hiding this any longer. "I'm...not from here, see where I'm from, history took a different turn after World War two. We didn't focus on new technology.." She sighs softly as she tries to explain, well everything to him, how different things had turned out where she was from. "Thing is, when I went to sleep, the year was 2018 still, I have no idea how I ended up out here.." Arthur hadn't said a word the whole time she had been talking. Wither or not he believed her was a different story. She hangs her head a bit after a moment of silence. "I honestly don't know what to tell you..my life, has just been one thing after another...waking up here was the best thing to happen to me..." She watches him for a moment before he finally says something. "So the war never happened?" She shakes her head at this. "Not at this scale, no, there was always the threat...but no one ever pulled the button. I wasn't alive during the Cold War, but people were just as scared then, then what they are now.."

She sits down beside him, looking into his eyes. "You think I'm crazy don't you?" There was a slight pause before he spoke. "No...oddly, if nothing else, it..makes sense...you really have no idea how you got here?" "No not a clue." There was another pause. "Any idea it can...send you back?" She thins her lips at this. "I don't know, I gave that some thought, but there's no telling if I'll be sent back. So far it seems I'm here for the long haul." He slowly runs his fingers through his hair. "And now the Institute thinks they can use this to their advantage. Even though you know for sure it wasn't some device that sent you here..." She nods at this slowly, he was a smart man after all. "Nothing they can use, but they don't believe me...and now they'll just come out and try to find us again..." She blinks as she turns her head. "Unless.." She gets up and heads out, Arthur quickly following after her as she finds Nate not far with Danse. Before either one could speak she stops them. "I have an idea." Nate crosses his arms at this. "Well your plans have worked out so far, lets hear it." "We use your Pip-Boy to teleport back to....wherever it was we were at, along with the entire Brotherhood." Nate feels his jaw drop. "But how?" "It's a computer, well a small one, but it still hold the data of where we teleported from. All we have to do is lock on to where he came from and go back...with a bit of surprise." Nate gives it some thought. "But would it work?" "It teleported us, if we all hang on, I'm sure it'll work." He gives it some more thought as he starts to agree with her.

"It's a long shot, but we can't just sit here and let them attack us. It's bad enough they know more then they should..." She bites her lip for a second. "I get the feeling these people have been watching the both of us for sometime now. From the moment you left the vault..." Nate shutters at this, he didn't like the idea they had been spying on him, but it all added up on how they knew so much. "Then we need to act, and soon, no doubt they already caught on we managed to escape..." "Then we don't have a lot of time to waste." Sara turns to Arthur as he pulls out his gun, he was more then ready to get the show on the road. Even Danse was ready as they gathered a small number of soldiers at their side. She takes his Pip-Boy and fiddles with it for a moment. She figures it out and finds the location of where they had came from. "Nuka World....?" She blinks a bit as she slowly looks up at Nate. "They hid us....in a old amusement park?" Nate scratches at his beard. "I hate to say it, but that's a damn good plan, who would think to go look at a old park?" She shakes her head at this slowly. "Shame popcorn isn't a thing anymore." Nate lets out a low laugh at this and they all hold onto him as he sends them back to where they had came from. Sara was surprised to see it had worked. They had hidden a large area under the park where no one would be able to find them.

The whole place was in a panic after the found not only Nate missing, but her. 'Father' was the first to show up as Nate rises his weapon after he had gotten it back. "I'm going to make sure you never come back." Shaun rises his hands slowly. "Look, I know you're angry, I understand.." "No, you don't understand a damn thing, the Institute took the only family I had, Shaun, the REAL Shaun, is dead, you're dead!" He shoots the Synth, and bits of metal go flying. He was more machine then human. They all storm out, and clear out the area. Sara made sure to hit X6 fast before he could use any recall code on poor Danse. There were so many Synths hiding in this place. It felt like hours had gone by before it was safe to roam the area. Sara was surprised just how many computers this place really did have. A whole room, just nothing but computers. She sits down at one of the terminals and gets it booted up. Sure enough this place had been there, for just as long as the Institute itself, without anyone's notice. They had files on everything from the Brotherhood of Steal, to even the Minutemen now. Nate sits behind her as he looks at it all. "Look at all of this, they could have done so much damage...even before I woke up..." Sara could only shake her head and finds the kill switch. "Now no one can use it.." Nate was a bit thankful, but blinks. "How are we going to get out now..?" Sara looks up and groans. "F*ck!" Arthur just shakes his head at this. "We'll just find our way out the old way and send out a signal grenade. But we'll sweep the place first, we not leaving anything behind." Everyone nods and gets to work, they did not want a repeat of something like this to happen again.
