Chapter 45:

New Years Eve came, and Sara was surprised to find themselves back in Sanctuary. Preston had gotten a hold of Nate to tell him that they had been seeing some rather odd things as of late. So she had joined to see what was going on, as well as Paladin Danse of course. A few people were on edge and Preston was happy to see them arrive. Over the last few days Nate had been roaming the Commonwealth and came across Cuire. She was in her new synth body and by the looks of it the poor thing was still getting used to having only two arms. Sara always found her cute, but annoying to have around. The French accent was still interesting since no one else spoke like she did. But it had been programmed into her long ago. As she roamed the walls with Danse she spots a small caravan moving their way. MacCready almost tumbles from his spot, he had been waiting for them it seems. She watches as a tiny boy looks up and just screams. "Daddy!!" The tiny thing runs over to RJ and he was quick to scoop him up in his arms. The man was close to tears to see that his boy was walking again. Even Sara had to sniff, it was heartwarming. She sees Daisy and nods her head to the Ghoul. Even Danse was smiling. "I'm glad they made it from the Capital, they made it here rather quickly." Sara hops down as the rest of the caravan gets into the town safely. Seems they had picked up the pace a bit, because something, or someone had been trailing them the last few days.

Nate joins them and smiles brightly to see RJ holding a tiny boy. He wore a slightly over sized shirt and pants. He had the same hair and eyes as his father, but his skin was darker. Nate walks over as the boy hides in his father's shoulder. "So this is Duncan?" RJ just nods and smiles. "Yeah, it's okay, these are my friends.." The boy looks at them shyly, but holds onto his dad. It was far to cute for words. "Never thought I'd see the day.." Hancock slowly makes his way out, his hands in his pockets. Duncan blinks at him a bit. "He's a Ghoul...like aunty." Daisy just blushes a bit at this as she shrugs. "Had to tell them something to let me take the kid with me." RJ just nods at this, hardly angry at this. "I had no idea I had an older sister, thanks, I owe you." Daisy just laughs at this, Sara had always liked the Ghoul, she had a soft heart for being pre-war. RJ just sits his boy down. "You see these three, they helped me find the cure for you.." Duncan places his thumb in his mouth as he looks over at Nate, then to Danse, then to Sara. They were so much taller then the three year old. She had always found it amusing when kids stopped in their tracks to look at people so much taller then them. "Hard to believe he's yours RJ, he's to cute for words.." He just glares at Sara as Nate chuckles. "I hate to say it, but I agree.." RJ throws a small rock at him. "No one asked you smarty-pants." The mercenary had taken one of the houses near the end of the street as his own. He had been working hard to make a spot for his son when he was well enough to travel. He had to hand it to Daisy, the woman was good at her job.

Daisy and the others were just happy to have made it as Hancock wraps his arm around the woman. "So any idea what was following you?" Daisy just shakes her head. "We never saw them, but we know for sure someone was trailing us the whole time. Hope you got room for an old lady like me." Nate just laughs at this. "Of course Daisy, and to be fair, even frozen, we're about the same age." She just waves her hand at this. "Oh don't I know it sugar, I think you're the only one here that remembers how green grass was..." Nate lets out a small sigh. "And cars, being able to drive instead of walk.." Daisy shakes her head at this. "Can't say I miss the traffic..." The two just start talking about the past, leaving all but Sara confused. It was still hard to act like she had no idea about any of this but she just shakes her head, looking at Danse. "Come on soldier, I get the feeling they won't stop for awhile." He just nods at this as they head out of Sanctuary. She wanted to head back to the Red Rocket Station to see if they could spot anything. She shouldn't had been surprised Hancock came along. Danse wasn't pleased, but Hancock wasn't happy about someone following the caravan. Sara looks around slowly, the place was mostly just one large storage area now since not many people came out this way. She sees the frame that held power armor. The one there looked like it was about ready to fall apart. "Nothing out place as far as I can tell.." Danse follows after her, keeping his laser riffle close. "Why would anyone follow a small caravan?"

Sara could only shrug. "I think the question is who's following, and what they'er looking for. Because if it was raiders, they would have just jumped them." Sara heads back outside to where the cooking station was. It hadn't been used in some time as Hancock follows her. "That's just what I was thinking....it sounds to....organized." Danse frowns at the Ghoul as he steps over to where Sara was, keeping an eye on her. Arthur would kill him if anything happened to her. "Right, you don't think it some left overs from the Institute do you?" Danse gives it some thought. "It's possible that some of the Coursers survived, after all that's what they were made for.." Sara just rubs the back of her head. "Well there's no point on guessing, might as well just take one last look around and head back." Hancock looks down the road to Concord. "Well I sure as hell don't see anything now...think I'll just scope out Concord just in case.." Sara nods at the Ghoul, watching him head out, the area was small so he should be fine. The two of them soon went back to Sanctuary. "I still don't see why you let him get so close to you." Sara blinks at this as she looks at him. "Guess he doesn't bother me. I wasn't raised Brotherhood, besides it takes far to much energy to hate people..." As they head back they spot a Vertibird pass over them. Nate made sure to clear an area for them just in case. She didn't even have to guess who might be dropping in.

"I'm starting to think he worries to much." Danse lets out a low laugh. "Well, I know Arthur, I still don't think he's really used to being in love.." Sara nods at this as they walk back into the small settlement. RJ was holding his boy so he could see it for himself as Arthur steps out. He fixes his coat as he looks around. Nate walks up and salutes him. "Welcome Elder, good to see you." He nods and salutes back. "Paladin, the place looks better since the last time I saw it.." He blinks and looks down to see a small boy. Duncan had managed to get away just long enough to try and get a closer look at the Vertibird. "Cool~" He smirks a bit, he's had little experience with small children. But he was used to the squires they kept on the ship. He kneels down slowly, RJ keeping his eyes on Arthur. He still didn't have much trust in the Brotherhood. "Want to see the inside?" Duncan's eyes light up at this. "Can I?" Nate chuckles at this, this kid really was to cute. Sara couldn't help but smile as Arthur showed the boy what the inside of the Vertibird was like. "Okay, that's even cuter..." Danse was beside himself, never seeing this side of Arthur before. "It's new, he normally gets really nervous around kids." After awhile Duncan runs back to his dad, talking a mile a minute. It was going to take RJ ages for him to get this kid to go to sleep.

Arthur walks over to her and she couldn't help but smile at him. "So you made it, I'm surprised." He pulls her close and kisses her. "Well, even I need a day off, I made sure Kells had things under control before I left.." He takes a look around. Most of Sanctuary had been covered in small lights for the evening. Nate had invited everyone for New Years. He felt they should celebrate the New Year together. Even if Arthur was shooting looks at Nick. The detective just tips his hat at him, always the gentleman. Hancock finally makes it back as he wraps his arm around Nate. Of course he had to lean up a bit to do so. "Well now it's a party." Arthur was not happy about the Ghoul, but Sara had enough time to try and make sure he understood he was harmless. Mostly at least as she holds him back. "See anything?" "Other then what was left of a dead Deathclaw, nothing.." Nate lets out a low cough, surprised that was still there, but they were huge. "That was me, took that out with an old suit of power armor...imagine my surprise..." He had never seen one before, and he almost s**t his pants when it came out. Arthur looks down at her as she explains. "Someone was trailing the caravan that came here, but they can't be sure who, or why.." Nate shakes his head at this. "I say we forget about it tonight and just celebrate."

Cuire was more then happy to join, even if she had no idea what they were celebrating. "Oh Monsieur Nate what are we celebrating?" Arthur just raises his brow at the woman. He had never heard someone talk like that before. Nate just chuckles a bit, she had been in Vault 81 for many years, alone. "It's New Years Eve and since I actually have a clock on this thing." He holds up his Pip-Boy. "We can have a proper count down., then get crazy drunk." Danse was shaking his head at this, but Hancock and Cait were all for it of course. Sara just lets out a wistful sigh. "Man I would kill for a bottle of Fireball, that s**t knocks you out.." She made sure Duncan hadn't heard her as Arthur turns to her. "I never heard of it.." Nate had a dreamy smile. "Oh man, I had a bottle some years ago, it's a cinnamon whisky, it's so good..." Sara points at him and nods. "I always liked it because it reminds me of the candy. It's so fun watching people try it that's never had cinnamon before!" Nate was surprised she knew about it, it was so hard to find around here. Nick was quiet about it as he lights a cigarette. "Mine was watching people try anything sour, it's a shame you can't really find things like that anymore.." Sara sighs deeply as she nods. "Yeah, guess we'll just have to get drunk the old fashion way!" Arthur just shakes his head at this, but he slowly starts to relax around everyone.

They had all gathered in one spot, talking and sharing drinks. RJ sat back with his son in his lap. The boy far to excited to sleep. Nate couldn't help but smile every time he looked their way. At least the mercenary had his happy ending, and finally had his son back. He jolts when he feels Danse hold his shoulder. He had ditches his power armor for the night. He just hoped he wouldn't need it. There was a jukebox playing light music, but it was mostly going ignored. Arthur made sure she didn't drink to much. It took her a minute to understand why before she smirks at him. She jumps a bit when Hancock comes out of nowhere. "Never pinned you as a party girl." Arthur narrows his eyes at the Ghoul, but Hancock ignored him. She lets out a low sigh at this. "Hardly, though I do blame my friends in the past that got me into...well just about everything..but drugs." He just shakes his head sadly at this. "You don't know what your missing." "Oh I got some idea, I think I'm good.." Sara hadn't been on many medications over the years, but she was sure she had enough after what she went through. "Never again, that was not fun, even if it was something the doctors gave me. Oh take the full pill, you'll be fine." She looks down as she shakes her head more. "Worst pain I ever went through." Hancock gives her a surprised look. "Damn sister, what did they give you?"

She looks up a bit, trying to remember. "You know, I don't remember the name of it, just what it put me through...and it was pure hell." He tips his hat to this. "And you're still standing." Arthur takes a step forward as he pulls her back. She blinks, hoping that he wouldn't start a fight. He was still really uncomfortable with all this. Hancock smirks at this however. "Well ain't that sweet, you crew-cuts sure are a protective lot aren't you?" Arthur was about to say something but she cuts in. "Oh stuff off, he's trying...maybe." She turns her eyes to him as he shuffles a bit. Hancock seems to let it go and wonders off. Arthur was a bit more relaxed now, well it was a small step at least. It wasn't long before she spotted the familiar faded trench coat and hat. "Hey Nick, long time no see." He just smiles brightly, ignoring Arthur all together. "Good to see you again doll, glad to see your holding up well." She giggles at him softly. "Oh I can't complain...though I will throw in a complaint about this music, the hell are we listening to?!" She didn't really care much, but it was so, boring it was slowly getting on her nerves. "Meh, guess it's better then country til you think your ears will bleed." Nick gives her a surprised look. "Oh, where was this?" She gives it some thought. "Back when I lived in the Mid-West, where I worked, the radio we had was always set to country, and it was the same songs over and over and....you get the idea..." He was so easy to be around, even if most of his wires were showing.

It was getting close to the count down as Nate turns off the music. Arthur wasn't sure what to expect, but Nate starts the count down. Everyone joins and when they reach zero, some made a toast to the New Year. For her, she just smiles and grabs Arthur by his coat and kisses him deeply. He was quick to wrap his arms around her and closes his eyes, kissing her back. She pulls away after a minute as she smiles at him lovingly. "Here's to a New Year.." He had long ditched his drink to keep his arms around her. "I look forward to it..for once." He normally wasn't all that excited for a New Year. But for the first time in a long time he had something to look forward to. Even if it did turn out they couldn't have a family he would still be at her side. It hardly mattered, he just wanted to spend all the years he had with this woman at his side. He leans in and kisses her again. The couple had mostly been forgotten about by the others. But Nate couldn't help but smile when he spotted them. He turns as he decides to do the same thing with Danse and his whole face goes red. "Nate..." He hangs his head as Nate chuckles. "Oh relax, no one cares." "You're one to talk, get a room!" "Shut up Hancock, you're just jealous!" Nate shakes his fist at the Ghoul before looking back to Danse who was now trying to hide. This really was going to be a much better year. At least Nate could hope for a better year, for all of them.
