Chapter 44:

Christmas came and much to Sara's surprise most of the ship had been covered in old Christmas lights. No one seemed to mind it was just an old tradition that no one could recall where it came from. Nate had a good chuckle, it was a bit strange for him to see that no one had any idea what Christmas was about outside it was once religious. And since most religion went out the window after the bombs fell, the meaning behind most holidays had been lost through time. Not that he minded, Nate's mother fell into a hard religious group after his father drank himself to death. They made her feel so low about everything, she didn't last long and Nate was on his own. He tired not to think about it anymore, once again there was a reason for him joining the army the way he did. Nate lets out a low sigh as he looks outside the large window in the command deck. "I miss snow..." Danse tilts his head at this, standing at his side. "Snow?" Nate gives him a warm smile. "When the weather got cold, during this time of year, it would snow. All you would see is a blanket of snow. Sure it was cold as hell, but it gave you a reason to stay inside and enjoy a warm drink..." Danse slowly smiles at this, it only snowed in a few places, at most after the fallout. "It sounds relaxing in a way, it's rare for it to get cold however..." Nate lets out a low sad sigh. "Yeah I know, that's why I miss it." Nate turns to Danse, the man was out of his power armor for a change. The last few days had been quiet since their get together to clear out Quincy. "The other thing I miss is hanging mistletoe."

Danse was confused again as he rises his brow at Nate. "Hanging what now?" Nate lets out a good chuckle, Danse was so adorable when he got confused. "Mistletoe, it's a small plant you use during the holidays. The tradition was if anyone was standing under it, you kissed them." Danse was blushing now as he looks out the window. They had been a couple for awhile now. But he was still very bashful about it. Not that Nate minded in the slightest, it was damn right cute. But to his surprise Danse tugs him close and kisses him deeply. Nate just smiles at this as he slowly wraps his arms around him. Someone lets out a soft cough and Nate blinks, seeing Arthur smirking a bit as he crosses his arms at him. Sara giggles at them, it was rather cute seeing these two together. "I'd advise you two to get a room, if it wasn't next to mine.." Sara watches Danse's face go bright red as Nate rubs the back of his head. "Heh, sorry sir." Arthur just shakes his head, he had gotten used to it over time. "It is Christmas, even if most of the people here don't really get what it's about.." Arthur rubs the side of his head. "I never bothered with the idea. I remember someone once telling me when I was younger it once had something to do with gifts.." Nate just nods his head at this. "More or less, the meaning had changed even before the war. It was mostly a time for families together and enjoy the day." He was going to leave out the idea of Santa, because everyone would think he was crazy.

Arthur turns to Sara. "Should I have gotten something?" He was looking a touch unsure as she smiles at him. "Nah, I'm fine I don't really need much and I'm not going to lie, I'm a hard person to shop for. It has to catch my eye.." Nate lets out a low laugh. "Sounds like Nora, and the price normally went with it." Sara lets out a low sigh as she nods. "Yeah that's how it normally worked. Anything I wanted was always outside my price range, it gets sad after awhile." She shakes her head after a minute. "Even when I did find something I didn't really have room for it. I collected so much crap over the years it's nuts how much I had.." Nate leans back at this. "Like what?" "Oh..books mostly, anything involving fantasy. I also had a good collection of horror as well. Toys, you know, anything remotely cute and fluffy...and shut up." She glares at Danse as he starts to chuckle a bit. Arthur knew of her weakness for small fluffy things and even had a good laugh about it. "I also had a habit of collecting rocks, you know anything interesting like crystals, coins whenever I found them, even tools. Hell I had my own toolbox after awhile of s**t I found." Nate was shaking his head at this. "You are an odd woman..." "Pfff you're just now figuring this out?" She just smirks at him a bit. "Trust me, that's not the worse of what I used to pick up...." Nate just holds up his hands. "I think I get the idea.."

The rest of the day went by smoothly. Most of the soldiers just swapping stories of times long past. It was, interesting and quiet at the same time. Most stories the others knew like the back of their hands. Other stories were new and interesting. Nate even jumped in and talked about his time in the army before the bombs fell. No one believed him about the snow however, let alone that grass was once green. Sara felt a bit bad for the guy, but he seemed happy to share either way. At the end of the day Sara returned to her room with Arthur as she starts to remove her clothes. Even after getting shot she remained in the uniform Nate let her have. It was by far the most comfortable outfit she had. Because those flight suits, were just to tight for her liking. Even if the reaction she got was priceless. Arthur never could keep his eyes up when she decided to wear it. Of course now, getting undressed his eyes were already roaming over her as he tosses his coat to the side. Once she was free of her clothing she heads for his shower, with him quickly following after her. She gets the water going as he closes the door as stands with her, kissing her lightly as he pulls her close. Work had been easy going for awhile. Most of the task that was laid out had been taken care of. The last of the nukes had finally been dealt with. And Prime was now retired for duty, even if Ingram was still a bit upset over the loss. Sara just smiles as she wraps her arms around him. Her back now against the wall as he stood only an inch away from her.

She had spoken with Cade a few times. His best suggestion after awhile was to just give it a try. She still wasn't to sure, but as far as he could tell she was healthy enough to try for a kid. Didn't mean she was sure she was ready for that. Hell if she would ever be ready. The idea still made her nervous for some reason. Still, looking at him, how his eyes seems to change whenever she was around was enough to calm her a bit. He had kept his beard short for her, and she still found him handsome with the new change. He wouldn't shave all of it, thinking he would look to young if he did. So she let him have that much at least. He presses against her as he kisses her deeply, running his hands over her body. It still surprised her just how much he cared about her sometimes. Hell it still surprised her that, any of this was real. She had long decided however to stop thinking about it though. She didn't want to change it, and bringing it up seemed like a really bad idea. She lets out a soft moan as his tongue makes its way into her mouth. Her head tilts to the side as he moves his hands to her legs as he places himself against her. They still had their moments, just the two of them, when nothing else mattered. It was just them, and a steaming hot shower. As long as the water heater held up, which it had been since the last time she took a peak at it.

Her eyes flutter as he pulls back. She takes a deep breath as she looks into his eyes. He seemed a bit lost as he brings his hand up, running the back of his hand over her cheek. She moves her hand up to hold it. "What's wrong?" He shakes his head. "Nothing...still wondering how I got this lucky." She giggles softly, every once in awhile he would still doubt himself on what he was doing. He had his own way of going about making sure she understood how he felt. Even if he might not always use words, which she was fine with. He wasn't the most emotional person, but she knew why. "You're such a charmer.." They didn't argue much, then again she never really picked fights with people. Not that they had many fights to start with. He was rather calm now, even after the whole Danse thing. She hadn't seen him get that angry in awhile. He was trying to be better. She moves a bit as she wraps her leg around his hip. He grinds against her a bit as he kisses her neck. She gives him a sly smile as she wraps her fingers with his. "You still want to try Arthur?" His eyes go wide for a small moment as he looks into her eyes. He looked surprised for a moment before his eyes just seem to light up. That right there was a good enough reason to give this a shot. He tightens his hold on her as he rest his forehead against her's. "Are you sure?" She gives him an honest smile. "I'm sure, we'll never really know for sure unless we try and I'm willing if you are..." His kiss was all the answer she needed, he still wanted this.

After a rather long time in the shower they dried off and returned to his bed for the night. She had long gotten used to the constant hum of the engines on the ship. She could see how people got used to it. It got oddly relaxing after awhile. She closes her eyes a bit as he just wraps his arms around her. It was still a nice feeling to have someone there for a change. She jumps a bit however when he starts trailing his fingers over her. Sometimes it didn't bother her, other times it tickled and it made her jump. He lets out a breathy chuckle, he knew what he was doing as she turns to him. "You stop that, I have a habit of kicking you know.." He gives her the best innocent look he could pull off. It didn't work but it was still cute. "I wouldn't dream of it." His hands move to her hips as she glares at him for a moment. "Oh I'm sure, that won't stop you from trying however." He just moves a bit closer to her. She still enjoyed looking into his eyes. How blue they could get when he was being completely honest with her. "Of course not, though you are jumpy.." "Because it tickles...so I can't help it." He had learned the hard way that she could be extremely ticklish, by mistake. She had tried, and failed to find any weak spots he might have. He had none and it was slightly disappointing. However she had learned he loved it when she bit him so she had that. Seems his neck was the only spot she could get him to melt. Well that and another spot, but that was a given.

She lets out a low sigh as she settles in his arms. "It's still strange..how much has changed..." He leans up a bit, leaning his head on his arm. "How so?" Her mouth twitches a bit. "I don't know, I know not a lot of people get crazy about the holidays anymore after the bombs fell. But my grandmother always went out of her way to try and make it special. I was their only grand-kid after all." She didn't really talk about them much. From what little she did, he had enough information. Her grandmother died shortly before her folks split. When her and her mother moved she never heard from her grandfather again after that. They had been good people, when she was younger. She just always had the feeling her 'father' had something to do with it. She just never did figure out what. "I just remember all the food she made. That woman always went out of her way...I miss her food..." He gives her a small smile as he places his free hand on her cheek. "I'm sure she's proud of you." She lets out a dry laugh. "Heh, I don't think it would bother me if she wasn't. All things considering. But thanks." Arthur never did have much for family, They had all but died out before he even had much of a chance to know them. "I often wonder what my own parents would think of this..." She tilts her head at him. "You being in charge, or the ship. Because it's both impressive.." The Prydwen was still a wonder to behold, no mater how many times she saw it.

"I'm not sure what you believe in Arthur, but I'm sure your parents are proud of you as well." He had never given it much thought. Some people believed in some sort of 'afterlife'. He wasn't sure what to really think. He seems to shake it off after a minute or so. "So what did you do after...everything?" She lets out a sad sigh. "Nothing, after awhile. My mom tired, it was never anything fancy, but it was good enough at the time..." She looks down at the bed as she takes in a deep breath. "After she got remarried we often went to my step-dad's ex wife's house, because you know, he had kids with her." Man that was always a mouth full. "When it first started, I was super excited, because for the longest time it was just me and my mom. Boy did that feeling crash and burn. They made it really clear I was not wanted at all...it sucked on so many levels.." She watches his brows knit at this. "And your mother never caught on?" "Oh no of course not, this was her ticked out of the hell hole we fell into. I should say she fell into. The minute she had her way out, she took it and made sure to leave me on the sinking ship so to speak." He lets out a low growl at this. The more she spoke of the woman, the less he liked the sound of her. Not that he had a great deal of respect for the woman that raised Sara. After all this was the same woman that almost drove her to suicide.

"Hey if nothing else I did learn one thing." His eyes turn back to her at this. "I learned I could take care of myself." He was about to say something before she stops him. "Hear me out, I left home at eighteen. Sure it was hard, but I learned so much. How to manage my money. How to buy food for less then what most people spend. I would have never learned to take care of myself." He seems to think this over for a bit. "It worked out for you in the long run..." She smiles at this as she kisses him. "It made me a stronger person, and I wasn't alone...I had Ty..until.....well, but he helped as well, so I owe him just as much." She had a point, she always seemed to make a fair point when it came to a lot of things. "But now I got you, and you run an entire army, that's a huge step up." He laughs deeply at this. "Glad to know I'm an improvement.." She rolls her eyes at him a bit. "You can't beat a floating ship, and one hell of a sexy boss." He flushes at that as she giggles. He still blushed when she called him handsome she loved it. "You're also really cute when you get all bashful still." He frowns at her a bit, still trying to argue against her finding him 'cute'. "I know I know, you're not cute, your manly as hell." He points his finger at her. "You're damn right I am. One of these days you'll stop making me blush like an idiot.." She places both hands on his face as she smiles at him lovingly. "Trust me, the day you stop blushing is the day I'm not doing my job. I love you Arthur, I don't want you to ever feel that I don't.." There was a flash of emotion behind his eyes as he kisses her. That's all the answer she needed.
