Can we steamroll this site and re-do it or something?
To clarify, I simply don't understand the purpose this site has, but then, I never really did. Was it a game? A forum? A "hangout"? It's always lacked focus and never easy for people to tell others about without some pointless explanation like, "well it's a big forum, but there's like avatars you dress up and... games, and.. i guess an art arena?"
I joined around the beginning of December 2003, less than a year of the site opening, simply because my then 'girlfriend' wanted the 50 gold referral bonus for getting someone to open an account using her username as the referrer. I recall looking around, seeing some weird "link list" which just had a bunch of weeaboo and hentai websites listed, a modest forum, and these bizarre avatars. Looking through the first page of Ian's item shop, I saw flame pants, promptly laughed and then logged out until my girlfriend mentioned getting a free Santa hat just before Christmas.
This was what began my time on Gaia, where I would end up meeting a handful of interesting people, playing around with site moderation, learning how best to be an a*****e to those who deserve it (which came in handy in more professional settings), greatly expanding my music tastes, and surprisingly meeting the wonderful girl who would become my wife 14 years later.
So, I ended up getting a lot out of this site, but none of it was really what Gaia advertises itself as offering. I have my doubts whoever runs this place will be able to turn Gaia around, but if not, it had a good run and I'm glad to have found it.
