Watching Higurashi: When They Cry...
...my thoughts so far.

===SPOILER WARNING===
Depending on how far you are, this journal could contain spoilers for episodes 1-7. I'm just gonna be writing out things as I think them, with no real editing. If you have not started watching this series, and do not want to know anything about it, please do not continue reading this entry. Thanks!
======================

Alright, now I'm gonna start talking about the show. I started watching yesterday afternoon, in a rare spot of free time, while working on commissions. Not the most productive way to do it, I know, but it works. Also, this isn't a review, moreso just my musings that I'll probably look back on after I finish the show. I know I could just look up if most of my theories are wrong and/or what stuff means, but I don't want to spoil any of the show for myself, because it's doing things that I don't expect, and I like that.
I've been meaning to watch this since high school (dang-o), and I'm really glad I started. It's something I haven't been wanting to stop watching since (until it got dark out, because I will forever be a wuss). It keeps me wanting to know what's next. I kinda figured from that first episode that, once Keiichi started asking questions about the murder, and Rena showed up with a huge cleaver, that it would only go downhill for the poor guy from there. Honestly, I feel like the best thing you could do after hearing about a gruesome murder at the place you're at in an anime would be to be like "Oh, that's an awful thing to have happened", and not look into it. Not that that would solve the issue of the murders happening in the first place, nor would that make for an interesting show, but probably the best thing to do if you want your life to keep being normal.
Speaking of Rena, I really liked her. A little bummed that she ended up being, you know, a murderer. I kinda still felt bad for her in scenes like where Keiichi had to smash her hand in the door when she tried to break in.
Part of that, I have a theory on. I'm probably wrong, but I'm wondering if it's not some sort of demonic possession? The two characters that have done it so far, Mion and Rena, both change when talking about the curse/threatening Keiichi. They seem to speak differently, and their pupils become cat-like slits. I further think that because Rena does things like apologize to Keiichi, or become scared of him when he's wielding a bat. Of course, this could totally just be their real selves, and the "normal" personalities could just be a front. I like them all as a group of friends, though, and really hope I'm right on this, though I doubt it.
I do like that the series seems to keep me on my toes. I really didn't expect them to actually go through with killing their main character. Remembering back to the first episode, I assumed him avoiding being killed would be long and drawn-out, ending with him breaking the curse by killing Rena and Mion with the bat, as seen then. I was pretty surprised when he just clawed his own throat out and died. But then,the next episode got even more confusing, as he's back to life, and doesn't remember anything about the curse or being murdered. I'm wondering if it isn't some afterlife that he's in, or something? Stuck in a series of the same events reoccurring over and over? I'm only partway through episode 7, so I have no idea. It went from a police investigation on the guy and his death to him being alive and well?
But then he had to go and be dumb and look inside the shrine. He really should have just nope-d out of there, because it just seems like he's in danger of being killed again. Like a death within a death?
And about that overhanging threat of death again, or being taken away to be devoured by a demon, what Rika had to say about it both worried me and made me like her a lot. She was super cute when she was like, "I'll do my best to protect the cat". Like, aww. Too pure. But maybe not, with how this show seems to be going; she could totally be a murderous demon, too. But I'm hoping not.

Anyway, I know that was all a bit ramble-y. If you made it this far, good job getting through my random thoughts about the show. I tried to format it slightly so it wasn't just a giant chunk of text where I prattled on, but it might still be.
