Migration and Maintenance
For years I thought that Gaians would receive notifications when new journal entries are posted, then I realized that there is a system limitation with the journal subscription database and when we created the notification system, journal subscriber notification was omitted. So today I rolled up my sleeve and jumped down the rabbit hole to re-work the journal subscription system and added new journal notification finally. Hope I didn't break anything.
Last month had been busy as ever. I promised to bring back GoofBall in zOMG and that one journey took me down the path of reading through most of the code base and learning how to compile the zOMG flash client, and now I know how to compile new maps, so that might come in handy later. More bug fixes including a better quest reset system is coming. Also going to look into some quest getting stuck issues.
Runway finally had its contest granting issues fixed. There were layers upon layers of problems with how the system was designed, so simple bug fixes didn't address the underlying issues the first few times around. Hope everything is okay now. We plan to add some user created contests in the future.
Our Smartfox server was upgraded, so now it'll work properly with HTML5 games, and Codemonkey can start work on Towns 3! Can't wait to see Towns working properly on mobile (and getting rid of sushi server).
Meanwhile the server migration is in full swing. Many huge changes are being made in the backend on how files are stored and served. Our migration drive will be here next week and all 5 TB of avatar data will be copied over. And while setting everything up I learned how easy it is to setup image hosting with the new system, so as soon as I can I will add an image hosting option for all Gaians. Can't wait!
