Shadow of the Red Star -- Ch. 2
1-7-2018

The past few days have been spent trying to learn what I could about NASA's discovery. It is strange how it still has not broken out on the mainstream news channels. I took to the library and used a computer there. Needless to say, I was a little confused.Once I realized that the OS (is that what they call it) worked more or less the same, I was able to navigate it, at least. This Windows 10 is even more confusing than the one I used years ago, but I just kept telling myself, "Just type into the Google and click the results."

There was a poster nearby that had tips for research, which I never knew. It explains why I once found a result for a kind of yeast. Once I started typing in my queries, I found more relevant results. For my future reference, I will list what I searched under:

-Red Star
-Red Star - yeast
-Red Star + NASA
-Red Star + NASA + Discovery
-Red Star + NASA + Discovery + 2018
-Red Star + 1918
-Red Star + 1918 -Communism
-Red Star + 1918 +Astronomy

Under these results, I found nothing about astronomers finding what Spotter described, in 1918. What I did learn was that is is very possible that NASA found a red dwarf star that they had not observed before. I do not know much about astronomy, but I read that red dwarfs are incredibly common in space and they give off relatively less light than our sun, making them harder to see. If this is the case, it would explain why the news never picked up on it. But then why would IMP know about it?

There must be something, especially if it had reached the internet first. It cannot simply disappear. It was something I first learned about the internet, when I was being taught about it. Pictures can be duplicated. Videos downloaded. Words can be cut and paste. It was a scary thought to me--words said years ago, easily forgotten, coming back to haunt you. Somewhere in that vast web, someone must have found whatever it was that NASA put there. For today, however, this was enough research. I had to go home and prepare dinner.

On my way home, my thoughts were filled with what lay beyond our planet. The universe is so vast. We are so obsessed with this question of 'Are we alone?' , but we are also quick to dismiss those who witness something beyond humanity as insane. It feels to me, at least, that as technology progresses, we learn more about the world and the universe, but at the same time it is another bite from the apple.

When I was a little girl, humanity had just built its own wings. I had desperately wanted a flying machine of my own. When the war took Theodore, I thought about joining the army and flying one of those planes. But I was only 12 years old, and my father told me that they would never take a girl. I would also later learn that most pilots were expected to last 2 weeks before getting shot down. In hindsight, even if I was a man and old enough, I would have ended up joining my brother if I fought.

But then, in 2012, I fought my own war--and even got to fly. Funny how when I finally got that chance, I disliked both things. The Captain caused me so much grief, and there was the Devourer. I never want another case like those two again.I also prefer to have my feet firmly planted on the ground. The wings I flew with once--I was not piloting--were so loud, and I was worried I might fall out the side. I decided then that maybe we were never meant to fly, but I suppose some people are butterflies and eagles in heart. That is why we have pilots.
