Grandpa was flown to Tampa General Hospital last Sunday in the morning. Yesterday they confirmed that he suffered from a stroke via MRI. They believe it was caused by his Afib /aortic aneurysms / aortic dissection. Which was picked up by the CAT scan they performed.
Basically speaking, his Aorta, the biggest blood vessel of the heart. It's swelled greatly in size and the layers were damaged enough to cause them to dissect from each other. This means if the pressure is high enough it can damage the remaining layers enough to cause him to bleed to death.
We've got a few options: He can get his aorta repaired via open heart surgery. That will improve his survival greatly but due to his advantaged age and weakened state it might be to demanding and cause him to pass away.
The other options is to not have the surgery. Which in that case, he has a % 30-40 every year he goes without it being repaired.
Even then, his aorta is growing in size. There is a chance that as it grows, it can rapture. At that point there is nothing anyone can do as he will bleed to death.
Anyway, I've talked to my grand mother and mom about it. My Granny is the person that will be making the choices.
