The Red Book
To be honest, it was really quite extraordinary that Nekado was able to find so many of those pearls. Sometimes there would even be a precious stone to be found as well. If they weren't scattered around still easily found hiding places one might find it odd that that the supply never seemed to run out. They might even find it suspicious if they realized that Nekado wasn't the only one, not even the only centaur, to pass by here and look for treasure but it was only Nekado who ever found anything. Though, to be fair, freshwater merpeople were incredibly rare and this wasn't even a very big body of water. It was barely the size of a swimming pool with a small waterfall and the yearly melting of snow that kept it alive. If it wasn't for the fact that this pool was shockingly deep the merman inside wouldn't have been able to have survived at all.

The pool aside, if it wasn't for the merchant who'd passed by here many years go only to have a bag stolen from him then the merman wouldn't be in the pool to survive it in the first place. The merchant hadn't even known he'd been carrying another live creature with him in the first place. The egg of a merperson looked almost identical to a pearl. The only differences was that it was slightly larger and a pale blue color. The merchant had found it miles away at a big lake and hadn't even known the significance of what had been found.

When his bag had been stolen, the egg had fallen free and that's how Baye had ended up here in the first place. He'd hatched a week later and in a few short years he'd had changed the chemistry of even the water itself. It was now a clear blue all the way to the bottom, though that was too far down to see, and always the same temperature no matter the season or the weather.

Nekado was far from the first person to pass by here but he was the first one to catch Baye's attention. The merman didn't even really know why except that he was fascinated by him. The first time he'd come he hadn't even meant to leave things out for him, it'd been an accident. Baye had been twisting a pearl into the grass out of sheer boredom when he'd heard the noise which had him diving for cover behind the falling water of the waterfall.

The way that Nekado had seemed so thrilled by the object left behind had, to be honest, flattered Baye. Pearls were just normal things to him, like rocks or dirt, but this centaur was treating it like it was the best thing he'd seen in a long while. It had only taken that one time and Baye was hooked. He wanted to see Nekado as often as he could and the best way to do so seemed to be the objects the centaur was so fascinated by.

Of course, he couldn't just leave them in piles. That'd be too suspicious. His centaur would catch on to the fact that he wasn't really finding them on his own in less than a visit and he might never see Nekado again. No, he had to be subtle. This meant he'd leave the gifts scattered around as far as he could get them in places that you had to know what you were looking for to find them but weren't really all that difficult to acquire. After all, he neither wanted to discourage his new obsession if the objects couldn't be found at all or wanted them so easily found that unintended targets could steal them before Nekado got here at all.

It seemed to be working. The centaur would return and Baye would watch him with utter fascination from ever closer hiding spots while he hunted for his prizes. This time, he was actually right underneath the centaur's nose. He was just deep enough that the water concealed him, though only barely. He was excited to see how Nekado reacted to the new gifts he'd been given because this time there was something new.

He'd left several of his own scales hidden in a shell at the edge of the water. They'd shed naturally and weren't anything like the normal things his centaur seemed to like but the iridescent flakes caught the light like the others did and Baye was curious to see how he'd react to finding something new. Actually, excited would be a better word for it. Would he like them?
