Lanzer's Journal
More on Gaia Favorites
UPDATE: Just fixed journal commenting. You can comment in the journal system once again. 3nodding

End of my second week here and things are happening at light speed!

Talked to so many Gaians and all of the Gaia staff to collect opinions, while putting together spreadsheets after spreadsheets of bugs, features, and to-do's.

All the while I found my old code for a Gaia Favorites system that lets you to bookmark any avatars you see around the site, allowing you to build different collections to share, or to reference and check what items are in an outfit.

Beta testers had been testing the feature and it's pretty much done, but I realized that I've made a big mistake - I used a non-relational database structure to make things easier to build. That means while you can view your set of bookmarks, the Gaian being bookmarked will not be able to search which one of his/her avatars had been bookmarked and for how many times. Uh oh.

Need to spend another day building a proper database for this to work, then I can release the feature for everyone. Stay tuned for updates!

The system also allows forum posts and guild posts to be favorited, but I've disabled that for now to focus on the core feature of favoriting avatars.

And now, to forward something I wrote on Site Feedback:

My philosophy is this - as a member of Gaia staff, we need to proof to all Gaians that we're focus on bringing you all great features, creative events, and a fun place that you would like to call home. And we would ask for your monetary support if you deem that our efforts are worth supporting. We're not at that point yet, and I hope that in 2017 we can proof to you that we are a team who see your interest and enjoyment comes before everything else.

I'm 2 weeks in and we're at a transitional phase right now. I hope that we'll get to the point where I can achieve what I mentioned, so that we will have the resources to hire some of the old staff members who loved working for all Gaians.

I've talked to CodeMonkey already and he would love to be back. But first, we need to establish step #1 - to proof our worth, before we can get to #2 - regain monetary support from Gaians, then we can reach #3 - hire more staff members to build even more features. Please be patient with us as we finish planning what to tackle next!

Hey Lanzer! There's a bug you might want to put on the list.

If a journal comment goes over 2000 characters after completing a correct capcha, it will inform of the error. When hitting okay and asking to be taken back to the post, the user will find that they posted the comment to their own journal page!

In a similar sense, there is a bug where if you complete the capcha incorrectly, it will reload the reply/entry form, but now instead of being a journal comment being made, it's a journal entry being made. Submitting at this point I assume would create a new journal entry instead of a comment.

It's some weird redirection stuff!

With my bug report aside, here's a summary of what I was trying to say before I ran in to it.

Rock on! In the two weeks you've been here I already see a huge change. You're communicating to your userbase whether it be good or bad news. Gaia wouldn't do that before, as they didn't want to make the company look bad and risk people no longer spending on it in reaction.

You've already tackled a couple of bugs since coming back, and the Cash Sales are more transparent now with the % off coupon being removed and replaced with just a standard price in the shop.

I hope to continue supporting Gaia in 2017!

Lanzer, with a sensible head on your shoulders you will have no trouble recovering income for you and yours in the new year.

Ps. Thanks previous commenter for mentioning that. I was unable to isolate the issue myself.

Also I just experienced what Geminai was talking about except I was only trying to edit my post. When I clicked submit, it made me type in captcha and then it error on me. Brought me back to my journal when I clicked to go back to yours. sweatdrop

Couldn't edit my post in the end, meant to say *stalking not staking xD

With so many old admins expressing a desire to come back to Gaia, do you think we'll see staff like Fleep, Jakobo, and/or Ling?

Thanks for promptly fixing that commenting bug. I gave up commenting on this earlier because of that bug. Wait, nope, it said I screwed up the captcha (I didn't) and redirected me to a new journal entry still. >:[

What I wanted to say was that I'm excited for this feature to be released! I always wondered why it seemed to have never made it past beta testing. Saving avatars you see that you love is very common, but it gets tedious to do, especially if you want to make them publicly viewable. Saving them on your own machine or private account some place makes many and/or large files too. I've been doing this for more than a decade, so I should know. I don't know for sure what features this will entail, but automatic saving of the username and time/date along with the avatar would be fantastically helpful along with options like viewing avatars just by when

(Hit the 2k character limit. How long has that been there?)

they were favorited,or sorting to further split them down by viewing avatars by who made them in alphabetical order and then having them in order or date within each category of who made them, or letting us make it so we can create additional categories to see, say, just cosplay avatars we favorited or just the holiday avatars. It would also be nice to get something like this for just our own past avatars to be displayed for the same reasons saving other people's avatars manually sucks. A lot of people clutter up the avatar arena right now with entering absolutely everything they make just so they can use their entry history there as an automated way to save past avatars to show to people. Will the "reference and check what items are in an outfit" thing be impacted by the setting that hides equipped lists? I don't personally have strong feelings on it, but I'm sure plenty of people would get mad if they couldn't hide their equipped items list with this feature. Eventual post favoriting sounds great too! Bookmarking whole threads for one post way far in there isn't the most convenient of things.

I can feel the energy of the site is different and that's great. I've even seen it on facebook comments for gaia and that use to be a blood bath. For someone who has been on the site since 04 i've noticed that the site is the best when you are interested in posting in forums (ie using this as environment to create friendships) though I know that might not be the most profitable.
Before I would donate to gaia to get 'donation items' as a way to support the site. Now I feel like when I spend money on gaia it's to fund side projects such as apps that I don't use so my spending is disconnected. I'm ok with side projects such as apps I just wish gaia wasn't used as a cash cow to directly fund that project and the project would validate itself with bringing in money for it's own continued development. It just feels very 'throw something at a wall and see what sticks' and as a student of UX design.. we all know that's not how you make great apps.

Things I love about gaia: community, items, safe place to talk, art, and events.

Things I don't love about gaia: No attention to forums, too much items coming out too often so you can't build a culture around one item before the next one comes out, lack of innovation within the site.

I know you didn't ask for my opinion XD but I kinda just gave it >< sorry.

Yay! Welcome back, I so so so want you to do well with it!!

For me the most concern is that there's nothing to keep people invested emotionally in the site. The only draw is items like a clothes shop. Where people used to get excited for plot or EI updates there's now nothing. People don't care anymore. Story used to feature in all areas of the site from EIs, item description, RIGs and even events. Now it's just a use until you get bored Linda shop/site.

I feel that buyjng GC sale has done more damage than good. Since ppl only buy GC for discount now prices of everything in the shop is hiked to compensate, and as a result everything looks way overpriced in dollars. Off putting for any new buyers, and high shop prices is off putting yo anyone getting you money from GC earning offers since most give very little. Prices shouldn't be set so that you NEED to use discount t o make it reasonable.

Our user base is way smaller now, please consider a downsize of subgro hiups and forums to corall everyone into smaller areas and encourage more user to user interactions. I think people engaged in conversation have more onus to return.... You can post or lurk in some forums and it can take an age to ever get seen by anyone, let alone a quote.

Just saw that you were posting journal entries. Getting a look at what's going on and hearing about some of the small fixes underway is really neat. Some of it is stuff that I'm less aware of because I use certain features less, so it's a really great way of seeing what's going on around the site.

Thank you very much for doing this.

...Lanzer, you might want to replace all of your "proof"s (a noun) with "prove" (a verb). Just something I've noticed in a bunch of your posts lately. sweatdrop

It's endearing and yet heartbreaking to see that you have to practically rebuild Gaia the way it was supposed to be.

Goodspeed on your's, L0cke;s, and CP's mission to restore Gaia. I love you guys because you have always had our best interests at heart. And it makes me happy because it also means that I can FINALLY start backing this site up again.

If anything else, you should hire blue alaris. She was an awesome GM for a while and made so many of us happy during her time. Even if she declines, at least the attempt will be felt.

I first read this entry when the comment bug existed. This entry was so perfect that I was moved to comment and just say thank you. I had a whole bunch that I wanted to say at the time.. but.. I just want to say thank you for stepping in and already showing progress by tweaking and fixing so many things so far in such a short amount of time.

Real developers test in production xp

Maybe worth using bug tracker software (e.g. JIRA) instead of spreadsheets?
