econs tutor - A good introduction should SUMMARISE major arguments in the whole essay. This serves three functions that are important: -

(i) It forces a student to do appropriate preparation before writing the essay. In most cases, pupils strategy-as-they-write, and wind up veering off focus. A question which looks manageable at first, but find themselves stuck halfway due to a lack of arguments may be started on by some. If students are unable to discover enough points to produce a satisfactory introduction, they need to decide another question.
