Even if you have a lot of other priorities for instance, sports, extracurricular activities, etc., still you need to complete a senior project to graduate successfully

Studies have suggested that the unique genetic background of the golden retriever and a tissue microenvironment that supports the survival of malignant blood vessel-forming cells play a key role.

Its important to note that hemangiosarcoma in golden retrievers:

generally appears in one of four placesthe skin, the spleen, the liver, or the heart;doesnt usually strike until dogs reach their senior years, sometime between the ages of 9 and 12;tends to develop more often in neutered dogs, according to some studies; andmay show subtle or no signs until the disease is advanced.

Hemangiosarcoma of the skin usually has the best prognosis, as it is easiest to catch early on. Worse, according to Wendy Brooks, Educational Director at VeterinaryPartner.com, 25% of dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma also have hemangiosarcoma of the heart.

For more information on how you can help fight hemangiosarcoma, visit the Morris Animal Foundation or Dr. It often forms on the sparsely-haired areas that are more likely to get sun. 17 (July 2011).

. Skin tumors should be removed and biopsied immediately, as they can spread internally. For example, doxorubicin encapsulated with pegylated liposomes better target tumors by prolonging drug exposure to the tumorwith no significant harm to the dog. Modiano, are working on an early detection test that will help look for tumor cells in the circulation before the tumor has become a problem. al., Dog Models of Naturally Occurring Cancer, Trends in Molecular Medicine, Vol. Recently launched, the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study by the Morris Animal http://www.suzukicycles.com/Product%20Lines/ATVs/Categories/Sport.aspx Foundationwill monitor the health of 3,000 golden retrievers from all over the United States over a period of 10 to 14 years. Finally, the Golden Retriever Foundation continuously raises money for canine cancer research and welcomes donations for any of its number of funds.

What many people might not realize, Dr.

In January of 2008, several months before my golden retriever Liza turned 12, she became gravely ill. Removing tumors of these major organs isnt a simple process either, and survival time after surgery is grimjust weeks to four or five months.

Current Cancer Treatments Can Prolong Life

Although surgery is usually the first plan of attack when a dog is diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, surgery isnt always an option for cancers that have already spread. I knew shed been failing, but up until this point she was still herself in many waysshe voraciously ate her meals, wrestled with the new puppy, and loved going on daily walks. Current treatments that can prolong the life of a dog are available, and hope is there for early detection, more effective therapies, and possibly a cure one day. The cause of hemangiosarcoma isnt clear, but doctors agree that certain dog breeds, including golden retrievers, are predisposed to developing the cancer. Breen recently told Debbie Selinsky of Southern Neighbor that he is humbled by the response and support hes received from dog breeders and owners.

Also, golden retrievers that have had surgery to remove primary hemangiosarcomas with no major metastasis are eligible for the clinical trial of Dr. Doctors have also tested a variety of other therapies and delivery systems, including inhalation chemotherapy and antimetastatic agents, which may aid in tumor regression.

Nutrition is another area of study for those working on treatments for canine cancer. But while these treatments and others currently being tested show promise, none has yet proven to be curative or offer drastic improvement in prolonging life.

Doctors arent giving up, though.

Studies and Research Underway for Hemangiosarcoma

Currently, a new drug that targets the cells that spawn hemangiosarcoma (or so-called hemangiosarcoma cancer stem cells) is in the final stages of testing and validation and will be ready for clinical trial soon. Plus, surgery alone, as noted above, doesnt do much to prolong a dogs life. The end was near.

Unfortunately, Lizas story isnt unique. Despite the fact that autopsies and shipping samples can cost hundreds of dollars, Dr. To date, many golden retriever owners who have gone through the heartache of hemangiosarcoma have donated the tissue and blood samples of their stricken dogs to the MADGIC project. It looked like hemangiosarcoma. al., Treatment of Canine Hemangiosarcoma: 2000 and Beyond, Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Vol 14 (2000).

Rowell, Jennie, et. If you have a golden retriever, heres what you need to know about their number one cancer killer:

Hemangiosarcoma - The Hard Facts

A hemangiosarcoma is a vascular, malignant tumor of the endothelial cells, or the cells that line the inner walls of the blood vessels. Dan Vallera at the University of Minnesota, has shown great promise in safely and effectively treating dogs with hemangiosarcoma. This is especially true for tumors found under the skin, called subcutaneous or hypodermal hemangiosarcomas, which have a 60% chance of metastasizing.

Hemangiosarcomas of the spleen, liver, and heart have a much poorer prognosis. Although hemangiosarcoma doesnt just strike dogs, they get the disease more often than any other animal. And because studying cancer in dogs is enormously less expensive than in humans, not to mention the fact that canine clinical trials take much less time, canine cancer researchers are able to speed up discoveries that will benefit people too. Golden retrievers, along with their beauty and gentleness, have a susceptibility to hemangiosarcoma, a highly aggressive cancer that, according to the Golden Retriever Club of America, strikes one in five goldens. More often than not, these tumors go unnoticed until they cause symptoms, such as weakness, difficulty breathing, exercise intolerance, pale gums or tongue, decreased appetite, and even collapse if the tumor rupturesand by then the cancer has already spread. Modianos and Breens labs.

Golden retriever owners who have dogs under two can enroll them in the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study as another way to help scientists win the war on hemangiosarcoma and other golden retriever diseases. The study, headed by Michael Guy, DVM, hopes to unveil how genetics, environment, and diet affect the onset and progression of cancer, including hemangiosarcoma, and other diseases.

Another important study, called the MADGIC (Making Advanced Discoveries in Golden Cancers) Project, is also underway. Valleras new drug mentioned above. Other positive results have been seen with diets that are low in simple carbohydrates, have moderate amounts of bioavailable protein, and contain amino acids, like glycine, glutamine, and cysteine. This drug, developed by Dr. Its a win-win for man and animal alike.

Although hemangiosarcoma is a deadly disease that has taken the lives of too many golden retrievers, the problem isnt going unnoticed. Headed by genomics professor Matthew Breen of North Carolina State Universitys College of Veterinary Medicine, Jaime Modiano of the University of Minnesotas College of Veterinary Medicine and Masonic Cancer Center, and Kerstin Lindblad-Toh of the Broad Institute in Massachusetts, the MADGIC Project is a three-year study that will help researchers determine why goldens are predisposed to hemangiosarcoma, how the risks could be reduced, and whether DNA tests might help with diagnosing and treating these diseases.

In addition, veterinarians, including Dr. Breens lab.

Clifford, Craig, et. Still, owner awareness of this deadly disease something I fell short ofis vital. Interestingly, high-fat dietsespecially those containing omega 3 fatty acidscan benefit victims of the disease by starving neoplastic cells. One treatment that can lengthen life for hemangiosarcoma victims is doxorubicin, considered the most, and probably the only, effective chemotherapeutic agent in dogs with [hemangiosarcoma], with improvement in median survival times up to 4 8 months, according to a 2011 study published in Veterinary and Comparative Oncology (Blackwell Publishing).

While four to eight months doesnt sound like much, studies have shown that this time frame can be increased when certain methods of delivery for the drug are used. Dogs and people have many genetic similarities, develop similar tumors, and respond to therapies in much the same way. More information on this drug is available through the University of Minnesotas College of Veterinary Medicine.

Several ongoing studies in the hemangiosarcoma fight are also worth mentioning. The tumor may be caused by ultraviolet light or local irradiation exposure and appears as a rosy red or black growth on or under the skin. Once a golden retriever is diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, the chance of survival is slim to none.

But there is hope.

Current cancer treatments can prolong life spans of dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, and new studies and trials are underway that veterinarians expect will lead to better treatments and early detection. A lot of work has been done since Liza passed in 2008. It might have been too late for Liza, but many other goldens are benefiting today from the efforts being made in the hemangiosarcoma cancer fight. (Contact Dr. Jaime Modiano at the University of Minnesota for more information on trial enrollment.) In addition, blood samples of healthy goldens aged twelve or older are needed at Dr. Other than the few cysts shed developed on her body and her diminished energy, she was in pretty good shape. Whether the test proves to be affordable and effective, however, is still a question.

Helping Win the Golden Retriever Cancer Fight Benefits More Than Dogs

When a golden succumbs to hemangiosarcoma, there are positive steps that dog owners can take. Or so I thought.

The vet delivered the bad news: Liza had a tumor in her heart region. Breen points out, is the far-reaching benefit of these donations: studying cancer in dogs is instrumental in helping understand cancer in humans
