A Healthy Start: How To Grow An Organic Garden
For some people, organic gardening is a relaxing activity, while for others, it is a bother. The following tips will assist you in becoming an accomplished organic gardener.

Plant some tasty strawberries if you want your children to enjoy your organic garden. Kids delight in the idea of growing things and seeing how things change over time. Explain every step to your child and he or she will hang on to your every word.

Easily and quickly prepare your ground for a garden of perennials. All you need to do is use a garden spade to slice under the turf, flip it over, then spread wood chips over the area about three to four inches deep. Let this sit for a couple weeks, next dig into it to plant your new plants.

For in-home organic gardeners, you are looking for an ideal temperature of around 60-75 degrees for your plants. If they are to grow properly, it is important for them to be kept in this temperature range. Grow your organic plants under a heat lamp if this is a little too warm for your house.

Learn to work efficiently. Don't spend 30 minutes searching for a tool. Have all of your tools prepared and gathered for use before you work in the garden, and make sure to put them away neatly. It may be necessary to don a tool belt or cargo pants with extra pockets.

Make gardening efficient. Keep all of your tools together do not waste time looking for them! And put them away nicely when you are done, prepare all the tools you need before you go out to work on your garden. Invest in a tool belt or wear pants that have lots of pockets.

Apply equal portions of dried plant material and green into your compost pile. Add grass clippings, waste from fruits and vegetables, leaves, and weeds for the green materials in your compost pile. Dry materials, like sawdust, cut up wood shredded, cardboard, pieces and straw paper are good for your compost pile. However, stay away from meats, manure from charcoal, carnivores and other potentially harmful substances.

One of the most important things to consider when plotting your garden is to make note of your available space. It's common to not think about how much space a plant will need once it's full grown, and you don't want to crowd your garden. You need to take into account the plant's size when it is fully grown, as well as allowing space for air circulation between each plant. Plan accordingly and put an appropriate amount of distance between seeds.

Build raised beds with untreated stone, brick or wood. If you choose to use wood to construct your bed, choose a species that is naturally resistant to rot and avoid treated wood entirely. Some good woods are locust, cedar and cypress. In a vegetable garden, never use treated wood, as the chemicals can leach out into the food and soil crops. If you have already used lumber that is treated, you can line it with plastic or another type of barrier.

Would you like to kill those obnoxious weeds naturally? Layer sheets of newspaper on the surface of areas where you are trying to control weeds. Weeds can only grow in sunlight. If the weeds have already sprouted, you can place the newspapers over them and they will die due to lack of sunlight. As an added benefit, the newspapers will decompose over time, becoming organic compost. You can then add a mulch layer right on top so that it looks more attractive.
