Unfortunately most people don't seem to have a clue what to look for when it comes to buying computers. This is probably why my friends and family like to consult with me first before they buy a new PC or laptop. Carel: In the early 90s, I made some virtual reality environments. One was a primitive version of the Star Trek Holodeck and another was an interactive dance floor. You could interact with the VR with movement of your body. Then the World Wide Web started up and people's attention wandered away from virtual reality. About two years ago I discovered the small community of photographers who shoot full screen high resolution spherical panoramas and I was fascinated by the amount of detail one could get with the limited bandwidth of what we call "broadband" here in the US. It is much too slow for good quality video, so the panos are often a much better solution, with download times one can live with.
Adoption by developers is proceeding swiftly. Gamers can see an officially supported version of Half-Life 2 now on the Oculus Rift VR. Unreal Engine 4 is being rebuilt to provide simple support for developing for the Rift. Team Fortress, the free multiplayer game from Steam, is rebuilt to support VR mode, too. Since so much modern gaming already uses the first-person viewport as the default perspective for the player, deploying games for the Rift does not require a radical redesign of gaming engines.
