Unfortunately, none of the studies reported on separated analyses per VRF by gender. This would have been very interesting as the effect of VRFs or VRF treatment might differ between men and women.
Despite these limitations, this LXR-623 review showed that the influence of VRFs on the rate of cognitive decline in patients with dementia is inconclusive. Studies on HT are inconsistent. LDL-cholesterol seems to be associated with accelerated decline. The studies which research hypercholesterolemia and DM remain inconclusive. Many studies did not find an effect, although DM appears to lessen the disease progression. Smoking did not have a significant effect on the rate of cognitive decline. For having multiple VRF, the studies disagree whether there is an association with cognitive decline. It is clear photosystems these conclusions and its implications need to be researched further in prospective cohort studies and experimental studies, because the articles often do not agree if and how the vascular risk factors influence dementia.
