What Are Freckles And How Do They Occur?

Pigmented spots on the skin are known as freckles, which are more evident on those with fair skin. Those pigmented skin cells are called melanocytes, and they are known for producing melanin, acting as a protective layer. This buffer is necessary as it will shield you from the unfriendly external factors especially the sun. This pigment is very important to stop the damaging effect of the sun rays.

UV rays have detrimental effect on the melanocytes, causing them to produce high levels of melanin, which leave you with freckles. In other words, the ultraviolet rays from the sun cause freckles, an excess build up of melanin. Those with light skin tone usually have less pigment (melanin) in their various skin cells. The more sun your skin is exposed to, the darker will be your freckles.

Most children are affected by freckles, however, it is known that puberty also is a main cause as it encourages the cells to produce excess melanin. Finally, an even distribution of melanin on the skin will cause the freckles to fade. After some time, it is normal for freckles to subside but some will have this characteristic their entire lives.

Can You Remove Them?

There are many people that visit a dermatologist with an expectation that a procedure can clear their dark spots. The popularity of medical treatment to remove hyperpigmentation is due to the embarrassment they have to deal with. Beside medical procedures, the market also offers other ways to treat freckles, but consulting your dermatologist is the best way to learn more about your freckles.

You should visit a dermatologist right away whenever there is any significant change in your freckles or dark spots. Most people with freckles think that they are not in danger of developing melanoma. But this is a false thinking unless you practice safety measures such as using sunblock daily and keep yourself in the shades for the most time during the day.
