Soccer skill drills may seem useless if you do them over and over again without variation. For those who are truly passionate about the game, no matter how dull soccer skill drills may get, they won’t get bored, because they know that the very repetition of movements leads to the mastery of skills. But for regular individuals who just want to learn the basics, then soccer skill drills that are fun and progressive must be created to fill these individuals’ needs.
Here are some soccer skill drills that will help you learn but keep you interested, too:
1 to 10 Passing Drill
For passing skills, the 1 to 10 passing drill will help individuals learn and practice passing and communication. Divide the team into two groups. Make a grid that will allow ten players to successfully pass a ball around. Have 5 players of each team inside the grid. Have them pass one ball around, counting each successful pass. If the other team steals or intercepts a ball, even with a tap, the counting goes back to zero. The first team to reach ten passes without interception gets a score.
Protect the Cone
For defending skills, the Protect the Cone drill is a fun way to practice defending. Using the same two groups, have the groups set up 5 standing cones on both ends of a rectangular grid. Just like an ordinary small sided game, throw the ball in the air at the blow of your whistle, and have the teams fight for possession of the ball. The goal for each team is to knock over all the cones of the other team to be declared the winner. Teams must defend their cones by preventing the other team from successfully striking the cones with the ball. This will practice the players’ defending skills as well as practice strategy making.
Shooting Accuracy Drill
For shooting skills, this simple drill will help players take shots on goal with specific targets — both far corners of the back of the net. Place two cones on the far corners of an 8′ x 24′ goal. Have the players form a line one after the other. A keeper is also placed in the middle of the goal, to make it a penalty kick shooting practice. The player should take a penalty shot with the goal of hitting or knocking over either of the cones that are placed on both corners of the goal. This drill will practice the players’ shooting accuracy.
