A Savers store opened more or less across the road from me some months ago. I'm not a huge thrift store maven, but because it's close, I drop by every so often and I do carry their shoppers card. We live in a reasonable middle class neighborhood, so there are nearby sources of quality second hand goods.
Every so often, Savers has a 50% off clothing sale. I hit the last one, and walked away with 5 jackets of varying weights from coldest winter overcoat to a really wonderful glittery decorative jacket suitable for over the top nights out and science fiction conventions. And a tshirt and a sweater. All of which were either never worn (the pockets on the blazers were still sewn shut!) or appeared to be that condition. I'm really, REALLY picky about thrifted stuff. (Always check linings and under the arms for pilling and holes. But I digress.)
The total cost? About $30.
Across from Savers is Kohl's. I tend to get my jeans there because they carry a good selection of Levis, especially in the one style that fits me like a second skin. I don't like to thrift jeans - I'm just picky that way.
The cost for my new Levis? About $30.
I clicked on the shops to see what the new animal skins in Skin Tyte looked like. There's a couple of panda skins there for the new animal avatars.
The cost? $35.
So what am I going to have more fun with? What is going to be seen by more people? This is my disposable, "fun" money we're talking about.
I know what my answers are. Everyone has to figure out their own answers for themselves.
