Life, the Universe, and the Pursuit of the Perfect Game
This will be ramblings essentially. I sit here and type my thoughts as they occur to me, and whoever cares enough can read them. Sometimes I'll talk about school, sometimes games, sometimes I'll rant about my computer, and sometimes I'll just ramble.
Elder Scrolls Online
So I decided to make my first rambling about something that's been occupying the forefront of my mind for the past few days. Elder Scrolls Online. Now, just to give background, I've only ever played one elder scrolls game, skyrim. And that was enough that when I first heard they were making an online version, I signed up to become a beta tester right away. Skyrim is fun. Its huge. And if you let yourself, you can get lost in it with new things to discover and potentially be killed by around every corner.

Now, ESO has been in development for, I dunno, the better part of a year now? It certainly feels that long. Someone reading right now can take this moment to correct me.......Alright, back to the ramble. So, I've been waiting a pretty long time for a beta key so that I can jump in and make myself a character and get to testing before the full game got out and you would have to pay for it. I finally got the key on wednesday. Little did I know that I should have started the download that exact second. After the process of setting up an account to be able to play this game, I downloaded the zenimax launcher and hit update so it could start downloading the file. Two words.

Twenty Gigabytes.

That's how big the file was. Twenty bloody gigabytes. And to top it all off, the host that zenimax is using to distribute this monolith of a file can only send you so many gigabytes at a time. When I was on my school wifi, which at its very best loads things for you at the speed of now, could only manage to get this launcher to feed me one or two megabytes at a time. And I had to pull in a twenty gig file. My home connection isn't any better. The wifi is weak and slow, so only 200 kilobytes is what I had to work with. Just to reiterate how massive this file is, and how slow it downloads, let me give you some time figures.

I started downloading at ten am on wednesday. It is now twelve am monday, aka midnight almost a week later, and I still have five thousand, three hundred, and fifty megabytes to go for downloading this file. Once again, I should have made that zenimax account right when I got my key, because I got it at midnight on wednesday. the extra ten hours would have helped immensely, but not more so than zenimax hosting this huge file on a server that is spoonfeeding it to use with all the airplane and train noises involved while we are sitting here waiting for the bloody thing to put food in our mouths already.
