This is the last night
The last night I lie quietly
Tracing every inch of my childhood
Touching the corners of this old house
Still, safe, warm
This IS the last night
I will ever lie across from her
My sister
So lost, so brave
Watching her moment of peace
The ebb and crest of her breath
Beneath the heavy quilt
This is the last night
My dog howls
Long and lonely, my only companion
In the darkness
This is an ode to impermanence
And a promise that
None of you, not mouse
not fat cat afraid of mouse
not pure, golden Alabama
not gentle, sleeping sister
Will ever be forgotten.
Years and years from now
When I lay my head down
To sleep, instead
I will go here,
To this night
The last night
I map the existence of myself
In your life
