Copper's Curiosities
An Entry A Day Helps Keep Writer's Block At Bay
Goodbye
.
.
She could still hear him, whispering slowly beyond the empty rooms. The sunlight spilled its warmth across her and reminded her of when they met. His smile had been so gentle then. Plain, yes. Always creased and weary. Much like the weather of their country.

But she supposed she loved him for that.

The room was stark white, but with the peeling chips of paint she could see that it had once been a rosy cream. Perhaps this hollowed extension of the hospital had long ago been a nursery. Her gaze softened, her cheeks tinted pink and she let out a hearty sigh.

They had wanted children once.

A boy and a girl. And in that order.

He had insisted that the brother would need to be older. He would need to protect his little sister when they were long gone. But here she was thinking of non-existant children. In an abandoned hospital and at the age of eighteen. And her lover's breath was heavy as he called out to her, searching for her just a floor below.

The lead pipe had fractured her arm. Of that she was certain.

But she bore him no ill because she knew, deep down... That the man seeking her out was no longer her husband to be. No. He was nothing, but a shell now. Inhabited by something sinister and deadly.

And where her beloved had a purpose, a role to still fill, she had none. And as a loose end it was necessary to tie her up...

She looked out the window to her left and saw the mighty oak tree standing tall there. Its earthy texture filled her with a yearning she didn't think she'd have so young. Her left hand pulled away from her right and she winced at the pain.

Could she still try and escape?

Each footfall on the staircase brought him closer to her side. Closer to his prize. Closer to her demise. She shuddered and leaned against the wall, gulping in breaths of air.

Calm. She had to remain calm.

Morning had come and now she could see... but now so could he. And where she was fast he was faster still. With two perfectly good arms in tow. In one, the pipe gripped firmly.

His voice called out her name. He had reached the third floor and she could feel the sun's embrace leaving her. She was cold again, so terribly cold. That bitter chill reminded her more than ever that the monster wore her fiance's skin.

So when she saw his shadow cross the hall and those two beautiful blue eyes staring down on her she raised the gun with her good left arm and whispered sweetly.

"Goodbye."
