Shroud of Gaia Chapter 3: Birth of a Destiny
That night the moon glistened along the sky harmonically with the stars. Argo woke late at night spontaneously and terrified—perhaps a nightmare of some kind. He looked around with his heart still pounding hard and saw the beautiful lighting of trees from the moon. He took a deep breath, and to do a reality test, Argo pinched himself; Yeah, he was awake alright. Afterwards, he glanced upon the upper branch to see that Sasha was still in a deep sleep. Argo was relieved.
Stretching, he slipped his sneakers on and stepped into the mushy soil. Argo fell frozen when he took his first step. Then, an intense force began to drive him into the forest depths. He took his first step. Argo had no control over it; the thing was just, happening. First it started at a fairly slow pace. Without delay, the speed gradually increased. He would pass one tree every second, then two, then three. Argo frantically tried to fight this unusual sensation but it was hopeless. Four every second. Then five. The speed began to be frightening as he neared slamming into every tree just centimeters away.
Please, Argo begged with his soul. I don’t know if this is a dream or not but make it stop.
But it didn’t. The pace continued to grow quicker and more aggravating; every second was hours of torture and confusing until finally everything turned pitch black. Darkness, just darkness everywhere.
Argo became embraced in a another unique feeling. His body felt as if it left him and danced into the abyss, leaving his soul in a complete state of awe. Argo closed his eyes gently as there was no use of keeping them open in the sea of shadows. Surprisingly, just as he did, he was once more flung into a frenzy of twists and turns in the void. This time however it didn’t affect him nearly as harsh as the first time. The violent ride abruptly halted, casting Argo out of the darkness into something he wasn’t expecting.
It was a mystique place; rock fragments hovered in the air like time itself stopped. He himself was standing over—nothing. Completely nothing. He reached down beneath his feat to make sure it was glass, but his thoughts proved wrong. His fingers fell farther than his feat, which amazed and frightened Argo in an unusual twist. A voice called out to him.
“Well hello, pupil of Sarah.”
He turned his head left toward the sound of the voice, yet no one stood. “What the hell…?”
“Not exactly hell, but almost,” the voice spoke again, except this time a dark portal began to emerge in front of him. A foot crept out from the portal, and then eventually the body. “You and I are in the Void; no pain lies here, but neither joy. It’s rather stale if you would ask me.”
Argo took a step back, his mind racing to comprehend what exactly was happening. “Okay, I get…It’s the damn ‘shrooms I ate. Last time I’m ever eating them again.”
The man looked down and chuckled. He was rather slim, reasonable tall, and was dressed completely in a black silhouette. Moreover, he held a large scythe with a handle that ran all the way down to the ground. The portal simmered away into the air like smoke. “Oh this is no hallucination, nor is it a dream. Did you not pinch yourself just five minutes ago to test that theory?”
Argo was dumbstruck. “How did you—wait,” He examined the man more carefully, and only one thought came into his head. “Are you the Grim Reaper?”
“Reaper? Hah! I had not heard such a name in the long time; but no, he was my father. A good man he was though.”
“So then who are you?”
The man shifted his feat. “I guess there is no harm of me telling you. My name is Death, head commander of—wait no; there is no need for anything more. You shall only know my name and nothing more. But enough small talk. Tell me what Sarah has put into your pathetic mind, unless you would rather have me take it by force.” He held his scythe firmly, gazing harshly into Argo’s eyes.
He spilt everything in an instant. He told about how Sarah had found him during childhood, his alcoholic dad, and even that peculiar mark she had on her fur. It was only after how Argo realized how ridiculous he sounded describing about a talking cat, but Death just attentively concentrated on Argo’s words without a single care to the bizarre details. When Argo finished, Death replied with a nod and sat with his legs crossed.
“Hmm, interesting to know that she didn’t tell how she took both of you. Oh well, its—”
“Wait, both?” Argo’s heart skipped a beat. At that instant voices began to whisper around him. The air around began to distort, and Death began to spin around.
“Already? Damnit I thought we would have more time. Oh well I suppose. Remember this: If you tell Sarah about anything, and I mean anything about this, I promise that you won’t be having her for too much longer.”
He didn’t even have a chance to reply when he was once again propelled into darkness. Argo worried as Death’s words lingered inside his head. When he went back to reality, or what he presumed to be reality, he was propelled against the tree on where Sarah and he made camp. The crash was so strong it rattled the tree and woke Sarah, whose fur bristled while she hissed in instinct. She realized immediately Argo who lay in pain.
Sarah leaped from the top branch of the tree all the way down to investigate. “What happened? Wait—just wait,” He gazed into Argo’s agonizing eyes. “You met Death didn’t you?”
Argo now froze. He had two options: he could lie to Sarah or tell the truth. He was already beginning to lose her trust with his constant lies, and if she found out about this one, he could lose her permanently. On the other, Death’s words were dangerous knives to play with. It was a lose-lose situation. He thought about it real hard, and with a large sigh he spoke.
“Yes, yes I did.”
