Nebulous Dreams
Fact? Fiction? Unbelievably ludicrous ideas? It's all here in Nebulous Dreams!
Avis: Artform or neurosis?
I've learned, in my six years on Gaia (seven in March 2013!), that I pay a great deal of attention to my avi-crafting, and an inordinate amount of pride in the finished products. My inventory is only large enough to hold the items for avis I've written down and screencapped; if an item has no possible use in an avi, it's sold or donated immediately. I don't keep screencaps of avis I don't have all the items for. I'm very picky about creating avis that mesh seamlessly in the Flash spaces -- this is the prime reason I'm not really a fan of backgrounds. When I develop an avi, I always pay attention to all four poses: standing, sitting, standing back-turned and sitting back-turned. If a potential design has graphic glitches in any of the four poses, I'll look to redress it with items that both hide the glitch and don't detract from the original design; if I can't reconcile the glitch with the concept, the avi simply doesn't get made.

With all this, one may think why I don't apply to the Avi Arenas more often. There are a couple of reasons behind that. Primarily, I'm a cheapskate and don't wish to pay the fee. Second, I've actually submitted avis to the Arenas before, and without exception nobody liked any of them. That's fine with me; I'm the one who sees said avis on a regular basis, so the only person who really has to like them is myself.

I also don't put my avis up for sale in the Outfit Shops; again, I treasure my avis, and all the hard work that went into them. My personal belief is that selling my avis cheapens their artistic value. Users don't generally look for time and effort put into an avi in the Outfit Shops; they're looking to make a quick profit, with little care for the artist's effort.

I do, however, allow my equipped list to show at all times. If somebody steals my avi design wholesale, at least they'll have to work for the gold to get the items used; even then, they'll still have to figure out which items are using which poses. A minor obstacle, and one I'm well-aware is easily surmounted with judicious use of Tektek. Even so, my avis are not cheap, economically speaking: most of them are worth at least one million in gold, with the more elaborate ones making use of the most expensive premium items. Some of my avis even use multiples of the same item, and for Evolving Items I generally prefer to keep first-generations on hand.

So tell me this: are avis a form of art, or a neurosis elevated to memetic status?
