One of those lazy days. It's raining and I can't move very well so I'm cataloguing my seeds. I have two shoe boxes filled with store bought packets, home made packets and brown lunch bags of seeds. Right now I've got 93 of them catalogued. I have a handful of mystery seeds. It wasn't very smart to not label them, but it'll be a nice surprise in the summer.
I forgot that I had harvested a bunch of shrub and tree seeds when I worked at the nursery. I have about a dozen magnolia seeds, some quince, bayberry, chestnut, hazel and the ones I'm really stoked about: mint julep juniper. The garden centre here is open year round, so I'm going to get some soil and tags and I think I'm going to plant my shrub/tree seeds and put them outside so that they stratify and maybe I'll get some sprouts in the spring. I'm seriously super excited because I have 300sq feet of deck that gets full sun and I've only seen one squirrel so far.
I hope my irises and tulips will bloom this year. Last year I lived in a place that only had about fifteen minutes of direct sun and irises need at least six hours of full sun to get enough energy to produce blooms. I have tulips that I rescued from landscaping and they are beautiful. I gave the big ones away (I had hundreds of bulbs) but kept a few small ones. I got some sea soil last year and topped everything up + sea kelp fertilizer so I hope my tulips got enough good stuff to give me a few blooms this year. Again, they are gorgeous - a really rich dark purple. I found three bulbs in town that were dug up by the snow plow so I took them home and will have to plant them sometime soon too.
Someone left a big sheet of plywood at work so I asked my friend if he could bring it home and I'm going to make planter boxes from it. Since I have enough sun, and my neighbours did peas, lettuce and cucumbers last year without incidence (bears and raccoons) I'm going to give a try with veggies this year.
I'm also wanting to get at least two planter boxes for work which I want to put some sedums, artemisia, viola and some echinacea in.
I'm totes going to get over my head, but it's going to be fun. >:3
