...another question from friends |

For those of you who haven't had the "unique pleasure" of going to an art museum with me, I have definite opinions about art. I tend to be more with Wilde, who was of the opinion art isn't terribly useful, but should at least be beautiful. I absolutely love art, and it's the second-most important part of my life, right after philosophy. (They're intertwined deeply for me, but that's for later on.) My (probably absurd) insistence on aestheticism is definitely not the issue here, though. I fully realise it's unrealistic. Oh well.
So what I get asked is "Victor, why is art so important? Why do you care so much?", usually right after I have a violent reaction to some contemporary art I don't like. Please let me mention that I'm not just talking about visual art. I'm talking about that, and music, and creative writing, anything creative/artistic.
Art is how we can express things that can't be expressed otherwise, simply put. Art is one of the most free activities we can do, it's almost totally unconstrained. When at our greatest, highest levels of freedom, we have a beautiful, powerful ability. Under the right conditions, we can reveal much about the human and in fact the world. Art is, to me, the purest mode of self-expression. It's even better because it can inspire you to create more art and maybe reveal even a bit more about the world. (Maybe, under the right conditions, the world is a work of art. If you'd like, you can view it as created by the human imagination and rife with symbols. I think that's a little extreme, but I have a friend who insists upon this point.)
Anyways, I'm being torn away from here, but...maybe if you want, I'll add more later.
