Ram8lings of a Wayward Writer
First Day
Megakat City had always seemed bigger since her brother had died. She had tried doing things on her own, but there were so many dead ends and loop holes. There was something the Enforcers weren't telling her. But she never got the chance to know until she was older. There had been a lot of training involved, but she had made it through the academy. She wondered if her brother would be proud of her if he could see her now. He had always wanted her to do something that would make a difference in the world. And since she could carry on his projects, she could do the next best thing: become an Enforcer.

Today was officially her first day on the force. Technically, she could have gone for a pilot ranking. But she just needed access to old cases. In the end, she had ended up as a Commando rank. They were the heavy duty guys. The big guns of the Enforcer world. They were the ones to handle large scale threats. She had a feeling whatever had happened to her brother had to do with one of those large scale threats. She would do whatever it took to get her answers. Which was why she would be doing her best to put up with Commander Feral and all his pigheadedness.

She stared up at the looming silhouette of the Enforcer headquarters. She was already dressed in her uniform, the gray of her fur nearly blending in to that of the suit. She felt very monochromatic and she wasn't sure if that was good or not. She made sure that everything fit properly and was worn in the right spot. He tucked her helmet under her arm. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, though she wasn't sure if it would fit in the helmet. If it came down to it, she could probably wear a bun or even cut it short if she had to. She was sure there was some way she could make it work.

She took a deep breath, heading inside. "Um, hello there..My name is Robin Ironclaw. I just made it onto the force and was told today was my first day." She smiled sheepishly as she approached the receptionist. The woman looked at her over the top of her glasses and shook her head, as if to say, "You poor girl." But the woman directed her to a room on her right with the door propped open. Newbie orientation or something like that. Robin nodded, smiling and nodding her thanks to the receptionist before heading into the room.

She was surprised to see a surprising number of new recruits, In fact, most of the seats had already been filled. She slid into an empty seat in the back row, right beside a rather bulky tabby cat. "Well, well, what do we have here? A girl on the force?" He grinned, looking her over. "You look pretty scrawny if you ask me." He added with a chuckle. Robin's eyes narrowed and she could feel the fur on the back of her neck bristling. "I have my reasons. Besides, I bet I'm more capable than you." Judging by the color of his vest, he was a pilot. Not that it mattered to her really. There was a laugh from the bulky tabby's other side and a reddish orange cat leaned around him. "This one's got spunk, Chance! I think she'll be a good one!" He grinned and extended a hand. "Jake Clawson, at your service." He nodded. Robin decided she could tolerate this cat considerably more than the tabby. "Robin Ironclaw." She nodded, giving the cat a firm handshake.

His eyes nearly bugged out of his head when he heard her last name. "Ironclaw? Like, Don Ironclaw?" He asked. Robin tensed and nodded. "Yeah, he was my brother." She answered slowly. "Wow..Sorry..I was just a big fan of his work. I'm sorry about what happened to him." Jake answered, shooting her a sympathetic smile. "Yeah, Jake here is kind of a geek. But it's nice to meet ya, rookie. The name's Chance Furlong, probably the best pilot here." The tabby grinned, giving her a thumbs up.

"Oh, here comes the commander." Jake warned. Immediately, the crowded room fell silent as the broad-shouldered cat made his way up to the podium. He was certainly an imposing figure in his own right. But Robin's own experience had taught her that he could be a real jerk. So this was it. Her first day and it would be spent sitting on an uncomfortable chair listening to Commander Ulysses Feral go on and on about the good they would be doing for Megakat City and his high hopes for all of them.

Robin thought it would never end. Finally, the end came in a rush of applause as Feral left the stage. She breathed a sigh of relief and sank low in her chair. Chance grinned and nudged her with his elbow. "I didn't think he'd ever get down from there." He chuckled. "Me either. How many times could he say the same thing over and over?" Jake added as the two rose to their feet. Robin followed suit, pausing a moment to stretch. Well, this was certainly going to be an interested period of her life, she guessed.

Chance and Jake were waiting for her outside the room. "Wanna go grab a bite to eat with us?" Jake asked. The invitation was a bit sudden but the two seemed friendly enough so she shrugged. "Sure, why not?" It might be good to have some friends on the force. At least then she wouldn't always be off on her own all the time. Then again, they were both pilots. Well, she was sure she would get to work with them enough. "Great! Chance found this great pizza parlor right down the street!" Okay, yeah, she was really going to get along with these guys now.

Maybe being an Enforcer wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe she could stick around even after she had gotten her answers. "Well, this is the start of a very interested job." She grinned. "But you guys had me at pizza."

But no sooner than things settled down, things would change...drastically.
