xxxLight streamed across my face from the window right beside my bed and I stirred awake. I'm one of those people that when I wake up, I'm up for the rest of the day. I sat up on my elbows and noticed the mound on my bed. xxxI stared down at Crass and I couldn't stop the smile that touched my lips. She was probably the ugliest person to watch sleep. xxxHe mouth was hanging wide open and she was snoring loud enough to wake the dead. My father (who was unaware of the fact that Cress spends almost every night here) always blamed me for the terrible noises that come from my room. How wrong he is. xxxDrool covered her pillow (I vowed never to use that one again after she drooled all over it the first night she stayed her) and her short hair was sticking out all over the place, making it appear as though she'd been electrocuted. xxxDespite all of that, she was probably still the most beautiful girl I've ever seen in my life. I couldn't think of anyone better to share my bed with. There was no one else I did want to share my bed with but her. xxxTaking a moment to look away from Crass I glanced at my alarm clock. The glowing green digits read 6:10. I felt my heart thud in my chest. My dad was going to up here in five minutes and Crass was still here. If we didn't hurry, we were gonna see one angry pastor. xxxWithout any ceremony or warning I turned sideways in my bed and promptly kicked Cross to the floor. She'd be alright. She was cocooned in almost every single blanket that I personally owned so her fall was cushioned. xxxAn angry groan sounded from my floor and within seconds Crass's fuzzy head popped up over the side of my bed. Hair had escaped from her stubby ponytail and formed a dandelion puff around her face, almost hiding her eyes and mouth. Almost. I could still see her lips twist into a scowl and if looks could kill, I'm pretty sure I would have been dead last week from the look she shot me. xxx"You can glare at me all you want at school, but right now you gotta get out of here. My dad's gonna be up here any minute now," I whispered. xxxShe blinked once at me in confusion before realization washed over her face. The glare let her face and her mouth formed into a silent 'o'. xxxShe disentangled herself from the blankets and stood up, stretching her arms high above her head. She pulled the remaining hair from her ponytail and hopped up on my bed right next to the window she snuck in through all the time. Straddling the windowsill she looked back at me with a huge grin. xxx"See ya later alligator," she whispered punching my arm playfully. xxx"Peace out girl scout," I whispered right back before shoving her out the window. Just in time too. xxx"Jair? It's time to wake up son," My father said as he opened my door. The light from the hall poured through my room highlighting the mess Crass had made of my bed and floor and the fact I was sitting on an empty mattress in nothing but my boxers. xxx"I swear Jerico (this is my actual name but I prefer Jair so that's just what I tell people)," sighed my father resting a hand on his hip, the other still holding onto the door knob. "You don't even need those blankets. Almost every morning I find them on the floor." xxxStretching my long legs I step over the mound on my floor and head to my dresser to get some clothes. "I don't know what to tell you dad," I comment with a shrug while flicking on a light. "I go to sleep with them on and when I wake up they're on the floor. I'm tellin' ya, it's them not me." xxxWithout turning around I could tell my father rolled his eyes (he's pretty predictable). "I don't see why you'd need covers in this room. It's hot as Hades in here." He shook his head while fanning his face. "Anyways, breakfast will be done in about 15 minutes. Don't be any later than 20 minutes or you'll be late for school." xxxI stiffened. I might have been 20 years old, but my father still felt the need to order me around like I was still ten. Just for the last comment, I was gonna take extra time doing whatever the hell I wanted to go way past the 20 minute mark. I couldn't help myself. There was just a need within my to defy my father as much as I possibly could.
Later that morning...
xxxCrass and I found ourselves once again in biology class. Crass was going in depth about some dream she'd had while at my house, wild hand gestures included, when Mr. Glover began passing out our tests from last class. Where most teachers took forever to grade any work, this man was on the ball with everything he did. xxx The chatter slowly died from the air of the classroom as more students received their tests. Some sighed in relief while others looked over the front page with utter looks of horror. I couldn't understand why people would be that worried. This test wasn't that hard. My test grade reflected this fact too. xxx"Of course you would only miss two questions you Jack a**," scoffed Crass from behind me, throwing her test into the air. "I give up. There's no hope for me in this class." xxx"Shut your mouth Crass. If you would study I'm sure you'd pass these tests with ease. How many times have I told you to apply yourself? You'd be surprised at how fat that can get you in life," I teased, my mouth turning up into a half smile. I shot a sideways glance at Avery who was sitting in silence. Just before he turned the packet over I caught a glance of his score. Not that I really needed to, the front and back of the last page were covered in red marks all over the place. I sucked in a breath through my teeth. xxxHe caught my stare and a cocky grin spread across his face when he saw my test grade. "Not just a football star, but a brainiac too eh? Must be nice ." xxx"It has it's advantages," I murmur quietly, bowing my head. The way he had said it almost made it sound like it was a bad thing that I had done well on my test. I carefully turned over my paper so the grade could no longer be seen. It wasn't that I was ashamed of my grade, I just felt...bad for having it displayed in plain view now. xxx"If you want, I could help you with some of your class work if you need. And I could explain a little about football, too. It wouldn't be that big a deal." xxxThere was a flash in his hazel eyes but before he could say anything Mr. Glover coughed loudly at the front of the room, drawing everyone's attention to that displayed on the white board. I didn't get a chance to talk to Avery for the rest of the class after that. Every second was dedicated to rapid note taking.
That Afternoon
xxxI remained at the practice field after football practice, stretching out the muscles in my legs. I figured it had been too long since the last time I ran and seeing as though I had a little extra time I thought why not. Someone had managed to escape me in a practice game, that meant I was losing my edge. I couldn't have that happening in an actual game. xxxAfter saying good bye to everyone and switching my football cleats for my track shoes I made my way to the track that surrounded the practice field. I shook out my hands and feet, getting rid of any jitters that coursed through my body. I took a deep breath and held it in while placing my fingers to the track and positioning my feet. On the count of three I let out my breath in a steady stream and tore off down the track, only allowing myself to put in half of my speed. It was better to save your speed for the final round then spend it all in the beginning. xxx"Better watch out Avery," I panted. "You won't be getting away from me anytime soon."
