Scapegoats
Throughout history, every culture has had at least one group that is scapegoated and blamed for all the problems of the society. from the jews in Nazi Germany to the christians under Nero's reigm, these people are wrongfully accused and often persecuted on the basis of that. our society is no different, but our scapegoats have something unique and rare when compared against others. the scapegoats of the 21st century (America at least) are the rich. every day I hear people claiming that the rich need to give more taxes and that their wealth should be taken to fund others. This is troubling, because I fear that Rand was right, there are three kinds of people in the world: Those who earn money, those who take the money, and those who ultimately recieve the funds. I fear of what will happen if those who earn their wealth are persecuted to the point that other scapegoats have been. society (and through extension humanity), will degrade without a working economic system that rewards merit and effort. are we destined to revert back into the unintellectual dust from whence we came? or our we able to let go of our petty differences and think critically? the choice is up to the younger generation (of which I am a member), and so far I have seen little to ease my comfort in this matter.
