Last time I discussed this topic, I was talking about why it is I rejected most mainstream religion, with the possibility of looking towards animism as a potential candidate for my beliefs. Since then, however, I've come upon two rather important factors that must contribute to whatever set of beliefs I come upon:
First, that if I should adopt some already established religion or philosophy, I do so only insomuch as it is the best description of my belief system, and not as a defining factor in it. What do I mean by this? Well, this means that in the process of searching for what I believe to be the most likely truth of the universe, for for me truth is the only purpose in finding a religion, as will be discussed later, and as such, because at least some part of any doctrine is likely to be wrong, I must evaluate the truth of each part of a belief system regarding the universe independently, and not accept tenets that are less than accurate because I might like to accept the doctrine as a whole.
Second, issues of morality must be kept independent from issues of religion. It is of course the object of most every religion to reconcile morality with the religion's doctrine of the universe, and I would hope that, should I ever come upon such a belief system, that is be fully reconciled with my views on morality. However, the reason I feel they must be kept independent is because I feel that morality is important, independent of whatever belief system one ascribes to. It does not do to sacrifice or compromise a precept of moral action one knows to be correct in the name of adopting a doctrine of the universe, even if that doctrine says that no such code actually exists (as far as nature is concerned anyways). Because I believe it is always vital to act in a benevolent and just manner towards the rest of mankind, and the world itself, more or less regardless of what actually happens to be the truth, the two can be reconciled, but must always remain fundamentally independent.
As for my actual religious doctrine, that is currently difficult to say. I feel as though I can conceive of some idea of what might be right, but it is currently impossible for me to accurately put words to such notions.
