Chapter 1

The year is 50XX. Advancements in technology have been made to an astonishing degree, although normal life seems to not be affected by this turn of events. "Geez, I hate living here in this district." A boy said. This particular boy's name was Jak. Jak was 17 years old, which in this time is a big deal, as this was now the age you had to be to be considered an adult. "Don't worry so much, bro." Jak's little brother said. Jak's little brother, Dax, was a lot like Jak, except for two facts: He was younger and more impulsive than Jak, and, unlike Jak, who had regular blond hair like the rest of the family, Dax had orange hair, most likely from a genetic mutation. To explain the names of these brothers, you have to understand, their parents played a LOT of video games before they had children, and it is interesting to note that their favorite game series was the Jak and Daxter series. "Mom says we might be able to upgrade our house, if she gets her raise." Dax had said dismissively. Jak wasn't as optimistic. "You know how these things go, Dax. She'll get nervous and do something that will cost her the raise." Jak knew that, for some reason, their mother, Janet, who worked in the Disk Drive building, three miles away from the house, was only intimidated by her boss when she asked for a raise or an advance on her paycheck. This was most likely because her boss was her husband, Mark. "I don't understand it anyway," Jak said. "She can ask him for money when they're both at home, but at work its like someone's putting a gun to her head." Dax looked thoughtful. "Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the workplace isn't like home." he said. "What do you mean?" Jak asked. "Maybe because they aren't equals at work changes the way her co-workers see her, and she feels embarrassed that her co-workers might be right." Dax clarified. "Like a form of peer pressure? Maybe. But she won't tell us even if we asked." Jak said and looked at the clock. "Well, it's time for us to go. I've got my Casting Stone, do you have yours?" Dax pulled his out of his pocket. "Right here!" he replied. The brothers were participating in an event that would determine the top two strongest people in the city, who would then move on to become the Protectors of the Land, after a period of serving their city. But what they don't know, is that they are part of something bigger than just their land, and their lives...
