Psychological and Factual Flaws Within The "Pokémon Coma Theory"
"Have you ever noticed that the pacing, tone and story development of Pokemon changes after Ash is hit by lightning in the early episodes..."
- Episodes is plural. the lightning strike only occurred in the first episode and if you watch carefully Ash is blown back by the blast, not struck by it.
"Further evidence comes from the realization that even though his journeys take him vast distances, he never travels on a bike due to having developed a phobia."
- Episode 37 "the bridge bike gang" Ash rides the bike path on his own bike.
"The coma and fantasy explains why he doesn’t change much physically. "
- Most, if not every long cartoon series keeps the characters the same age for story write purposes along with making the artist's job easier.
"...and why town has the same police officer and every Pokemon centre has the exact same nurse. Joy and Jenny he knew from his hometown, and they act as a safety net or anchor, allowing him to feel safe no matter where he goes."
-The same thing goes for the numerous Nurse Joy's and Officer Jennies. This would be like saying that there's some deep underlying reason that Ash and everyone else in the Pokémon world don't change clothes. Perhaps that ash subconsciously wishes that no one has to bathe. -sarcasm- it's just ridiculous.
"Meowth especially wants to appease him because he remembers the good times with Giovanni. This places Meowth in a category known as Ash’s (corrupted) innocence. This is apparent because Meowth is able to speak. "
-Meowth was a stray in Hollywood who had been taken in by Team Rocket yes, but in no episode did Meowth ever spend any actual quality time with Giovanni. In fact Meowth often spent time fantasizing about being in Persian's place. If anything this suggests Meowth's innate desire to be accepted by his father and shown compassion, not corrupted innocence. if you remember in that one episode Meowth learns to speak to appease a female Meowth and win her over by becoming more human. he speaks out of loves desire, not corruption of innocence
The narrator is Ash’s higher mind, recapping and explaining the progress he’s made and the tribulations he will face, allowing itself insight into how best to awaken him.
-to simply be explained, once again many television shows have narration. However if this theory were true, it seems more likely that narration would continue throughout the course of the episode, guiding ashes every move as opposed to only the beginning and end of each episode. However this is not the case.
"That is why Team Rocket’s disguises are always believed. He knows it’s them (at least on a subconscious level), but chooses to ignore it so that he can better himself."
- Gullibility. without it Ash and his friends would never have conflict in their journey, making the show less and less interesting for viewers.
"You may recall that early in the show there were animals and references to animals. For example, the fish in the aquarium of the Cerulean city gym, or that the Pokedex lists Pikachu as “rat-like”. "
- This argument also doesn't hold much water again due to contradiction and simply not making sense. The author is saying that the reason real animals come up in Ash's subconscious are because they are hinting at the fact that he is in a coma? However the author also says that the coma happened after he was struck by lightning, and yet prior to being struck by lightning he was still living in a world with ONLY Pokémon. How do mention of real animals prove that he is in fact in this coma if there were none existing prior to it? The fact that these terms are used to describe Pokémon is merely because in reality Pokémon were originally designed from actual animals and plants, thus using words like "rat" or "worm" is to be expected if not impossible to escape from using because there are no other existing words in reality to describe the Pokémon themselves
"If Ash had loved puppies, everything would be about different breeds of dogs, and a dog fighting circuit, but as the series goes on, you see fewer realistic animals and more Pokemon. This could be a sign of Ash’s mind deteriorating."
- If you watch any television series you'll notice that as the show progresses it develops a life of its own, or matures if you will. there are only so many animals and plants in the world you can use to base new Pokémon off of. After a while to keep a series running and of interest when you run out of material you have to be creative. This is nothing short of a result of keeping the masses entertained.
Honestly though, anyone could apply this logic to almost any television series, movie, book, etc. there are so many different characters involved that you can break each of them down into a specific part of someone's personality. Also because television characters are usually very defined there its always easy to pick out a specific personality trait, and because there's usually always a main character involoved its easy to say, "Well this person represents the main characters desire to love..." As someone else put you could easily turn it around and say that Pikachu is the one in a coma overcome his own challenges. Theories are like statistics. You can apply a fact from any perspective into your analysis and make something look plausible. Not that hard to do.
Not to mention if this were true the creator would have to be some kind of genious right? Well if you actually look him up he barely got out of high school and never went to college. His hobbies were collecting bugs and his specialty was video games, not creating intricate plots for a CHILDREN'S SHOW.
Yeah it's fun to believe something like that is true because its definately makes things more intersting, and being humans we're always searching for a higher understanding in things, but truth be told some things are just simple. Mob mentality.... -sighs-
