Modern day, Crystal Murdock the "Strand Shredder" has killed her fair share of people by snapping the thread that connects them to their bodies. When her older brother Quartz was killed by a car, Crystal severed the driver and anyone connected to him, she was only six years old. A home-schooled introvert whose only connection to the real world is the internet and her job as a death penalty officer (her power is used as a humane killing method since those who are affected by it feel no pain) Crystal is reunited with Clive when he joins the security guards at her usual prison. Clive has never forgotten Crystal, and he will do anything to protect her, as unrest grows over the powerful eighteen year old's deadly ability.
