Ok. So like, this is my ten billionth rant about Les Mis but I don't care. OMG. THERE'S GONNA BE A FILM ADAPTATION OF THE MUSICAL. IM EXCITED. I've prayed so hard for this moment. So, one night last March, when I was supposed to be doing English homework instead, I was online literally just surfing Google. And somehow I stumbled upon several websites all telling me that Tom Hooper was planning on directing a Les Miz film. Before I continue, let me tell you why I am so frickin' excited for this film. A. I frickin' love this musical B. I have yet to see a Les Mis movie that I actually liked. Past Les Miz films have all sucked. The 1998 version was pretty decent....until they got to Paris that is. All of a sudden Marius is the leader of the insurrection but then spends the entire time running away from the barricade to find Cosette, Valjean slaps Cosette because she has the nerve to talk back and Valjean watches as Javert handcuffs himself and jumps into the river. Wtf? Not to mention that half the characters are missing or have minimal roles. The Thenardiers get all of five minutes, the students get like one line apiece and have no names. AND THERE'S NO EPONINE. ITS NOT OKAY. And all the black and white versions barely mention the barricade. The whole movie revolves around Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Cosette and Marius. Booorrring! I miss the students!
Ok, so the world desperately needs this film along with a film good adaptation of the novel. I think that this movie has a lot of potential, I am just praying that they don't obliterate one of the beloved musicals of all time. Because bad casting choices will bring it down. Ugh. Just think of Sam Barks and Nick Jonas in the 25th Anniversary Concert. It would have been better if they had just cast Rosalind James and Gareth Gates. Although, I might forgive Nick Jonas. Just because I was reading the forum in the Les Mis guild I'm in and a lot of people got into Les Mis b/c they heard about it from being a Nick Jonas fan. So, I'll give him that one. Anyway..back on topic. I hope they don't kill Les Mis forever. Also. No one can say that this is just some dumb rumor because not only has it been all over the internet, but I was watching a Tom Hooper interview last month and BBC had asked him what he was planning on working on for his next film. He said something along the lines of, " I can't tell you exactly what it is, I can only tell you its something big.' Well that's your big tip-off. Sure ,with such an ambiguous it could be anything. But come on folks. That interview laid any doubts to rest. If Les Mis, big time popular musical super famous story, isn't 'something big' . I don't know what is. Hell,I can only imagine the press that its gonna get. ITS LES MIS. People have been waiting for this movie since the day it premiered on the West End back in the 80s. Sure, the critics hated it at first but the important thing is that audiences loved it. Did you know that the novel is the second best selling novel of all time? Second only to the Bible?
But you know what I really hate? Les Miz fans who only love the musical and totally dismiss the novel. Its like, dude if it wasn't for the novel and Victor Hugo there wouldn't even BE a musical. Dumb-dumb. I also hate fans of the novel who are all 'OMFG I hate the musical!!!" You know what? Stfu. They are both great pieces of art and are beautiful in their own ways. And you know what? You really can't even compare the two. They are two separate entities in my mind. The novel is beautifully written and very heartfelt. But it can be a b***h to read and Marius pissed me off to no end. The musical captivates audiences with its magnificent score. And you know what? None of the characters are annoying. But its a three hour show. You know what else I dislike about Les Mis fans? Those crazy Eponine fans who hate on Cosette all the time. Granted, I used to be one of them. But then, I got over it because after reading the novel I realized that Marius Pontmercy is a pretentious, oblivious, wussy giant piece of stupid,. At least in the novel he was. I rather enjoy him the musical. Anyway, my point is. Don't blame Cosette. Granted she's a total Mary-Sue in the novel, but the thing is its not her fault she grew up sheltered and spoiled (by Valjean). Remember this kiddies, Marius was the one who initiated everything. He saw her in the Luxembourg Gardens (novel) and he's the one who ran into her while trying to run after Eponine in the musical. (Ironic eh?) Cosette was just excited that she was getting attention from a boy. That's all. But here's Eponine, willing to do anything he asks just because she wants to make him happy because she loves him. And Marius totally uses her and doesn't give two craps when she dies.(In the novel) In the novel, she freakin' took a bullet through her hand and back in order to save his sorry butt. So there you have it. Blame Marius. Ok...I'm done now.
