My gaming blog used to be located at Capcom Unity, but I'm forced to move it because members there are now required to have a moderator approve of blog posts. It's now harder to have my voice heard. So I will be posting my blog here.
Capcom, what in the hell is your problem?

Street Fighter... X... Tekken? Am i reading this correctly? Am I on the wrong side of the tracks in Stupidville? Who the ******** thought this was a good idea? Did you hire some of the employees of the now-dead Midway Games? Did those obviously-D-students put you up to this?

Let me tell you a tale. A tale about a game that pretty much destroyed Midway. The game: Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe. A crossover game that capitalized on the crossover frenzy you expertly pulled off nicely (up until the announcement of this Street Fighter X Tekken DEBACLE).

Right around the time you thought up Tatsunoko VS. Capcom (thank you again Capcom, seriously, that game is an example of a crossover done right), Midway thought up their own, with destructive results. Pairing Mortal Kombat with DC Comics. This meant one of two horrible outcomes had to occur: either the reputation of the a bunch of killers needed to be sullied and they had to become sissies, or humanitarian superheroes who would never kill had to become killers. They chose to soften the MK cast and they became shells of their former selves. No matter what outcome they chose, someone was ruined, and Midway created a stinker.

Fast-forward to today. Street Fighter and Tekken pair up for a new crossover, and history repeats itself. No Mr. the Slash-written rant blog would be complete without a list, so let me tell you why this pairing will fail like Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe.

1. Street Fighter is a strategic chess game (figuratively speaking). Matches take minutes to win, but both players have to wisely use their characters moves and abilities like parrying, rolling, trowing, countering, cross-ups, tech throws, canceling, and Super Combos to try to out maneuver and win.

2. Tekken gives characters over 50 moves, each one performed by mashing button combinations that are 15 buttons long, all of which drain the same HUGE amount of energy, so matches don't last longer than 20 seconds. Oh, and maybe you dodge. That's it.

3. Street Fighter characters have incredible designs and interesting background story. Street Fighter has been imitated by everyone else, including the karate guy (Ryu > Kazuya Mishima), the Bruce Lee character (Fei Long > Marshal Law) and the wrestler (Zangief > King).

4. Tekken's characters look stupid and dry. They're too normal.

5. Different engines. Both series' play so differently that they have no business crossing over.

Number 5 is a biggie. It makes or breaks a crossover. It made the Marvel VS. Capcom games because Marvel characters have powers equal to a character's projectile "fireballs" and other moves. They don't have to kill. Because of that, the pairing works.

Capcom VS. SNK was a great because both Capcom and SNK made games and characters that faught alike. Both had the same style of moves and combos, and almost nothing had to be changed.

Tatsunoko VS. Capcom was a great game because of the same reason Marvel VS. Capcom was great. The characters non-lethal weapon and power-based attacks melded well with Capcom's special moves so it cause no issue.

Had Sammy VS. Capcom been released (it was scrapped because the Atomswave engine was retired before production advanced far enough to warrant a finished game), it would have worked. Not only do Capcom's and Arc System Work's characters lay similarly, but also Instant Kill attacks, which really don't kill because they can be used in round one and the "destroyed" opponent would be back for round 2, could have been modified into Level 3 Super Moves, and after that, nothing else would need to be changed.

On the other side of things, Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe failed because it forced one side to change their ways to match the other, and the reputation of the changed side was tainted. The same will happen with Street Fighter VS. Tekken. Street Fighter characters will have to control like Tekken characters, or vice versa, whichever is going to happen, and fans of the side that has to change wont want to play.

That's why this crossover is a travesty. Tekken should only be paired with Soulcalibur and Virtua Fighter, as those games actually play like Tekken.

And don't you think it's time to give crossover fighters a rest? Jesus, we're still recovering from the hardcore pwnage TvC Ultimate All Stars gave us, and Marvel VS. Capcom 3 was recently announced. Give it a rest for a while.
