Today's topic is the emerald, May's birthstone.

Emeralds are used as talismans for the goddess Venus. They are symbols of faith, goodness, and kindness. When engraved with the image of a frog this stone is said to restore peace. Egyptians engraved emeralds with pictures of foliage to represent eternal youth and buried them with their dead. Emeralds were used to ward off epilepsy especially in children. They were also thought to help with eyesight. In China wearing them on Thursday helped bring good luck. In the middle ages it was believed that the stone would help to get a women chaste.
