Yaaaaaawn.
First of all, gays are still human beings. We’re all the same, folks. If you want to fly a rainbow flag over your head every morning when you walk out to get the paper, then so be it. But please don’t do it because you’re ******** gay and you want the whole damn world to know about it. Do it because it makes you happy.
I’m left-handed. Did you know that about ten percent of the world is left-handed? That’s roughly the same percentage of the world that’s gay, according to some studies. Do I go around wearing shirts, buttons, patches and other fabulous accessories declaring how proud I am of being left-handed? NO. Because if I did, it would just be… weird. Most people would probably react negatively towards it. Why? Because it’s almost like saying that I’m better than them.
But isn’t that a lot like how the “gay pride” movement works?
I’m sure most of my gay readers disagree with me on this, but I truly believe that if the gay community would stop trying so damn hard to stand out, and stop trying so damn hard to be as different as possible (Radical Faeries, anyone?), and just live their own goddamn lives, a whole lot more of the world’s straight people would be inclined to stop treating us like second-class citizens, and start realizing that we are just like them.
Let me again refer to the left-handed analogy. I write with my left hand, I do almost everything with my left hand. This means that I perform most of my day-to-day tasks differently than 90% of the population. But am I inclined to go join a group of radical left-handers and try to separate myself from those right-handed ways of life? ******** no.
Being gay isn’t about being fabulous, or wearing leather to bed, or producing tiny tears of joy every time you see a rainbow or a ********’ unicorn or hear a Lady Gaga song. It’s about loving someone of the same sex. That’s all. That’s it. The whole shabang. Whether it’s loving them through long-term relationships or loving them by ******** their brains out and then sending them out your door in the morning, never to be seen again, it’s still about love.
Because if the equality movement isn’t about deserving the right to love and making your love a legal, binding marriage… then what the hell is it about?
Last time I checked, it was still legal to wear a feather boa and glittery shirt out to the gay bar on a Thursday night. So obviously we’re not fighting for the right to be more fabulous or exotic than straight people (we’ve been doing that just fine for ages).
Before I get any further off course, let me wrap this up:
I’m not saying that gay people should stop it with the full color spectrum and make like business casual with cardigans and sweater-vests. I’m absolutely not saying that gay people should pretend to be straight people.
What I’m saying is that the gay community should take a big damn chill-pill and start acting more like human beings and less like the over-the-top queens that we’ve been slowly painting the picture that all gays are supposed to act like, look like, and sound like.
It’s not a compromise. It’s a rewarding way of life.
There’s nothing wrong with celebrating something that makes you unique. Hell, I practically wear a “nerd” sign on my forehead every day of my life, and I love it. But I don’t go around shoving it in people’s faces.
Please leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts on this. Obviously it’s something close to my heart, as I’ve put a lot of heart and soul into furthering the equality movement myself. I have personally organized a half-dozen protests, marches, and rallies for gay rights, as well as participated in 3 counter-protests against the Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church of hate, and even marched two years in a row in the “Million f** March” in Topeka, Kansas. I do not take this issue lightly, and I give my thoughts on the matter with a lot of deep thinking to back them up.
