Kimi sat cross-legged on the outcropping of rock that jutted over the bank of the river. Guitar in her lap, she strummed a few notes, progressing into the song she had just written. Eyes closed, she focused on the pure sound of the dark notes and how they mixed in with the sound of the rushing water. She sang along to her lyrics, a hurricane of emotions swirling through her.
Her head was pounding, and no matter how soothing the music was, it didn't assuage the jackhammer on her temples. She shoved that pain out of her mind, focusing solely on the dull ache in her chest. Her heart felt like an iron balloon that was deflating, sinking, pressing down hard on her stomach so she had this sick, dead-weight feeling inside.
Her insides were emptying, collapsing in on themselves, and all that could hold her up was the weak frame of her bones. She lowered her forehead to the top of the guitar, feeling the notes reverberate through her body in waves, making her nauseous. She repressed this feeling as well.
She sensed the soft fluttering of wings behind her as a harsh chill encompassed her withering frame. She felt so alone, so out of place. This was her place, where she wanted to be, and she felt like she didn't belong. She didn't deserve to be in such a majestic place, surrounded by all of Nature's glory. She decided she had to give something back in exchange for taking up the space.
She pulled a small package from the inside pocket of her fleece jacket. She unwrapped the cloth from around the razor blade, its sharp edge reflecting the sun's rays. She watched as she slid up the sleeve of her jacket, feeling detached from the action. She witnessed herself turn her wrist face up and put the blade to her skin, seeing the light glinting off the blade. She squeezed her eyes shut tight as she forced the edge that bit into her flesh. She felt the blood flow to the gash and spill over, trickling scarlet drops into the river below.
Ahem, came a voice from behind her. She knew the voice was only in her mind, yet she still turned to meet the direction of the sound. She gasped, wide-eyed in fear as she took in the sight of the being that stood towering over her. Clad all in black, with short dark brown hair and shining gray eyes, was what looked like the negative image of an angel.
His large black wings rustled softly at his sides as his gaze transferred from her eyes to her wrist. Her eyes, still wide in shock passed frantically between his gaze and her gash, her mind struggling to comprehend what he wanted from her. Finally, she glanced once more from her cut to his eyes before holding her wrist to him in offering.
