I watched as the truck pulled down that gravel road, a small cloud raising in it’s wake. I wanted to blame or dust for the tears on my face, but I knew that it was you who caused them. I’ll kept telling myself this was best, that things would be better with you gone, but it wasn’t true. I didn’t even realize I had started running, legs carrying me as fast as they could. My vision was blurred with tears, though it didn’t stop me. You turned off the dirt and onto the black tar road, passing by the old mailbox one last time.
No! The word was there in my throat, yet it wouldn’t come out. I don’t know if you were ignoring me or just couldn’t see but you kept driving, not a pause or stop until you were completely out of my sight, just a tiny dot forever driving away. Falling to my knees, I yelled in pain, in sorrow, in guilt. Feelings overwhelmed my body, crashing through me like the ocean in a storm. The pain wouldn’t stop, would not fade, staying with me as I cried. As if by some cruel joke, it started to rain. Not the heavy stuff like what you see in romance movies, but a light summer drizzle, barely enough to wet the grass and dirt.
I’m not sure how long I sat there in the road, facing the direction you had left but some time, my father had come out and helped me stand. The look in his eyes said he wasn’t sorry but he hated to see me in this much pain. Still I looked down the road, remembering those last words you whispered in my ear. “I’ll always be with you” Whispered so softly I’m not even sure it I heard it. My heart was far more than broken; it had been so hurt I wasn’t sure if I could ever repair it. Your face would be forever branded in my mind, always there, always reminding me.
